    Ok my reason for asking is I'm wondering if I can keep a few in a 40cm cube - it takes 60 litres excluding my canister filter which is 5 litres.

    Personally I am thinking even they are small sized, they would do better in a bigger tank (stabil waterparameters) though you have a canister.
