Making media bags for my new sump

What will you use for machanical filtration?

 

In my tanks I don't use mechanical filtration. Before my water gets to my tanks it is first filtered by my extreme industrial sand filter. There after in my tanks I only end up with organic waste which feed my bio-filters. I am done with cleaning nappies as it were! Lol!

Every three months or so, flush my sumps to remove any serious build ups to negate any crashes which may occur if you don't do this occasionally!

The answer is to maximise surface area and encourage the maximum growth of beneficial bacteria, both aerobic and especially anaerobic strains. My cultures need lots of food to proliferate and mature into powerful units.

The bacteria are quite fragile and the media bags must only get gentle manipulation when flushing every three months. Topping up or starting new systems I use Seachem Stability.

 

This is my sand filter. It takes 160 kg of filter sand. The blue small pump is the booster. The big green pump is for backwash only. @ 2.5kw, it must be very strong to lift the 160kg of sand.

 

It is fed from my 50 000 litre concrete reservoir. My 50mm borehole produces
12 000 litres an hour. I am lucky! ))
