Then I will most defenitely take it into consideration when I draw up the plans and talk to the builder. Better filtration is always good.

I have no experience with sumps, but I will go do some research. Will it make it any easier for myself? Can I do water changes from my sump or will I still have to do that from the tank itself?

Yes it will be easier to mantain and you the water changes you can do from there, it can also contain your heaters.

People also over complicate the concept of a sump - easy peasy once you got it right the first time

 

Then I will have to do my research and rethink my filtration strategy. I can see now how it will be neater if the heaters can go in there and I don't need powerheads in my tank.

If I have any querries about a sump tank I can always ask on TASA about it and I know that my friends will help me with it and give the best advise and tips to make it a success.

I will do that Tankmaster. The powerheads will just be for circulation and a bit of a current in the tank.

It will be an odd shaped tank and I will need some water movement. Any size that you will recommend?

For circulation, maybe you should look into a spraybar running along the top all the way around from the back, this water and flow will be supplied from the sump water getting pumped back into the tank.

 

I maybe 2 X 700/h power heads on each end with the outlets facing each other. . .enough flow without blowing the fish out of the water . .

Any stocking plans?

 

That spraybar-idea is a very good idea Donny. Ireckon that you suggest that the spraybar run on the sides that's against the wall???

Tankmaster. I'm planning on stocking the tank with some south- and central American cichlids. I love big Cichlids. Not too many. Maybe 6 different ones for some colour and variation so that it will be a good display. I don't want breeding pairs.

Jack Dempsey
Midas Cichlid
Red headed Cichlid
Chocolate Cichlid
2x Convict Cichlids (They can breed)
Leopard Pleco
Bristlenose Pleco
Maybe I'll get a Frontosa. (Just love them)

The fish all get big and I will still think about some of them, because the space will not be enough for all of them.

 

Don't bother with a spray bar. ..it's only going to give you a diffused flow , exclusively, to the surface. With those fish I would say you would need flow at a deeper level. More flow means less time for gunk to get stuck between rocks and decor. Hopefully the filter sucks them up so your job is as simple as cleaning the media ..

 

I can get good waterflow with powerheads that I place in depper water. The spraybar will oxygenate my tank quite well, won't it? I understand that it will disrupt the flow if it spray against each other but if I put two average powerheads quite deep in the tank it will create a current where I need it.
