I am pretty sure it is a piece of iron wood or black wood. Solid piece. Wood is about +-200 years old. How long it has been in the river for before i took it out. No idea.

I have had my piece im my tank for a month now no probs

I stopped flattening my substrate, they were digging like crazy. And discovered a juvenile in one tank, he is hiding under a rock were his parents dug a hole. my 2c, leave the tank they like it there way.

Thanks anyway @kitkat. I just liked the fact that it's not that typical aquarium pale blue.

@kitkat nice to see more George people on TASA. Very nice looking tank. What malawi's are you planning on keeping? As @Rickus and @mydummyname have said about them digging under the rocks is so true. They re-scape a tank over night. I am permanetly having to remove all my rocks, flatten the gravel and stack the rocks again. What I have found everytime I re-stack my rocks the stuctures change, never seem to pack them the same way. Fish have to establish new territories, alot of courting behavior and shortl after alot of females carrying. Enjoy your malawi tank.

Take some more pics when you have some fish in.

one of the dangers of these fish digging under the rocks is that it may cause a rock or structure to topple over and crack the glass, i know i was always paranoid that might happen...

HI @Shakes.......they are little escape artists:laugh:, my last tank I had was about 6 years ago before I moved from JHB to George. Really missed it, once it is in your blood...there is no cure...its going to take a lot of re arranging of rocks so that they all have their little place to hide and be happy in. Looking forward to that and watching as they all grow and have their own personalities. Its all most like watching your children grown up...but then again they are part of the family.. will post pics as I go along and add fish in and make changes. Not sure yet which malawis are going in... going to visit @scotty on Saturday to get some " test" fish...

lol i think all fish keepers have some level of paranoia, and i dont think its always a bad thing, coz the fish will benefit if we take better care of them, even if its coz of our own paranoia ;)

some guys position a piece of styrofoam in the tank to fit in the base of the tank, they then seal the edges with some silicone so that no waste or anything like that can get between the base of the tank and the styrofoam, this also keeps the styrofoam from floating up, they then add their gravel and ornaments etc. this is as a safe guard against anything falling over and hitting the base of course, but i dont know if you would be willing to go that far, its obviously effective but must be quite a bit of work involved, especially if the tank is already up and running.. i know i never did it, i was too lazy and didnt want to upset the fish by moving them to a container while i re-did their tank.

lol ya i get that, i think tho, that if you've arranged your rocks and things so that they lean nicely against each other type of thing, you should still be ok :) i think its when you have things balanced rather precariuosly that you have problems...
