    Welcome to TASA!

The guys have given you great advice :) The big trick with all fish tanks is patience - don't rush it and it will flourish!

    Welcome to TASA

I like your tank setup. What plants are using?

Follow the advice already given and be patient. Will look great when the fish are in

Thanks everybody I have found incredible value already from having joined this forum what an extraordinarily powerful resource this is! Having looked carefully at some photos on the net I am inclined to think I do have two Chinese Algae Eaters so I will return them to the store.

My plan for the tank is as follows. I have found b in a b it is Seachem Stability tank starter which I will add today. I have tested the nitrite level and it is sitting just below 0.3 so I hope the Seachem will sort that out. My son has a 100L tank which is a month old, tomorrow we intend cleaning his filter so I will squeeze all that gunk into my filter so hope that will help too. I will replace the goldfish with the Rummy Noses tomorrow and introduce the other fish gradually. I am going to look at some discus tomorrow and may buy some but will intro them once everything has settled nicely. My Ph is sitting at 7.5 at the moment so I need to work on that just a bit.

Thanks Ice, appreciate it, I am not sure about the plants except for the Java Moss that I have on the wood and in the opposite corner. The store assistant did not know what they were, they were really healthy and looked good so I bought them. So far so good, two of the species had small flowers which at first fell off, but the one group are starting to bud again so that's great.

    Hi and welcome.

Dude don't be to hasty, you need to take it easy don't rush your tank rather let the cycle finish. This is only advice we all try an help each other here and we dont want the fishes to stress unnecessary.

My 2 cents is rather add your Stability everyday for 7 days. Then buy next weekend have your water tested and if all is fine add only like 5-6 fishes per weekend at a time you might add more after you have added some gravel and clean his filter media in your tank maybe to get a quick injection of some bacteria but you still need to take it easy adding the fishes. 10 rummy noses might cost you like R90 and you dont want them to die of the high nitrites and ammonia in the water in the early phases of cycling. I can tell you that Seachem Stability is the best stuff out there but please take it easy I know the waiting phase when cycling a tank is not nice but rather do it right and wait patiently. Hope you follow all the advice given here as we are only trying to help you and we dont want you to loose all your fishes cause the bacteria colony has not grown big enough in your filters.

Thanks hviviers 75 of course you are right patience is the key. I tested my water this afternoon there was a bit of improvement with the nitrite levels. I have also added a Discus water buffer product to reduce the PH level. Thanks for the advice bud.

    Hi @Philz

Firstly welcome and I hope you find all the guidance you need on our site I really did in the begging. I first want to say that you are going in the right direction by cycling your tank first with a couple of fish at a time but as @Neels has said new tanks do some strange thing In the beginning when it comes to the new materials and plants and such all getting in to a rhythm with each other so I would also suggest that you be a lot more patient and just give it a month to all calm down. Now on the Discus front as I have bred some only thanks to this site and the info and knowledge that I have had passed down to me from some of SA’s leading Discus breeders I am hearing warning bell going off at the moment as just keeping Discus is an art unto itself, please note that I am not saying it is hard to keep Discus I am merely saying it takes a lot of extra patience and dedication. That brings me to what I want to say and that is your tank is way too raw to introduce such a sensitive species right now or even in 2 or 3 weeks, a Discus tank is usually cycled for discus over a month or longer to be safe. The next thing you need to think of is Discus need 40L of water space per fish. They also need to be in a group of minimum 7 fish, now in your size tank that’s 6.75 fish letter wise of Discus so you are going to be pushing it already and are going to have to do regimented daily 10% water changes for the filter to keep the water in pristine condition for Discus. I am in no way trying to put you off getting discus I am only trying to give you the bigger picture of how you need to plan for keeping Discus. PM me if you would like to get to know more on the subject I can point you to a number of good threads pertaining to the subject and introduce you to some of the more knowledgeable members that can teach you a lot more on the subject of keeping the King of the cichlids.

    Regards

    Jason

Great great advice in this thread; and that cycling period is most frustrating because we all want to walk out the store with our new tank and a bag of fish but we can"t :( (I know thats not what you're doing here :))
I have a thread going where I have restarted my 1.8m tank; and I would love to put some awesome fish in it ... but I will impatiently wait for it to be cycled. (I say impatient because nowhere in the fish rules does it say we have to wait patiently LOL - it just says we have to wait hahaha)

I am also going to kick start my filter bacteria, this weekend, by putting 2 well established filters into the tank to speed it up a bit. I have lost fish in the past due to being too hasty to add fish - I learned a hard sad lesson.

Loving this thread already - keep us posted on your tank, thanks. And welcome to the addiction :)
