Mm, you might find that the Hydra will be able to eat some of the fry. You must see what happens. The Hydra are actually eating the food that you are feeding to the fry, that is why they are also growing. If you over feed the bs you will also see how they feed on them literally, they catch the bs with their fronds and then they literally gobble them. I will check my records for some medication that will work without killing the fishes in the process. Kind regards, Dirk
Thank you very much @Dirk. I will feed them the hatched brine shrimp tonight so will keep an eye out for the Hydra eating them. Does light affect Hydra ie: Should I be reducing lighting periods or anything like that. Marc
Hydra are not influenced by light at all. They will collect near an area of water flow in the hope that they can catch something in the tentacles, including fish fry.....
me neither, i've googled both these plants and they look so similar to me, i dont know how i'd know the one from the other if i saw it at a lfs... but it looks like a stunning plant @MarcHawke
I fed my fry BS for the first time last night. They swam right past each other but no eating! To be fair, the fry and BS are quite similar in size! Here is a pic of the fry and you can see the Hydra.
Hi Marc, how are the babies doing. How big are they now, are they growing. What feed are they on now.
@Shaun P - Thinks are not good. At a guess I'm down to 10 . The hydra in my tank have gotten out of control. I'm thinking of catching the remaining fry (not sure how I will do this because of their size) and temporarily storing them whilst I disinfect the tank! Boohoo! The Dwarf Gourami parents have laid more eggs in my community tank and Dad is safeguarding them . I moved my Sunset Gourami on Thursday night and they have spawned in my new tank. Turns out my 2 "males" are a male and female .
Ok, stop with all the "how to catch fry" suggestions :worried:. I managed to catch them with my brine shrimp net . I removed them from their tank, cleaned the entire tank  and rehomed them. I have 20...Yay :elefant:! Now can anyone tell me why some of the fry are guppy fry sized and others are flea sized and should I be concerned?
i use a suction/syringe whem moving fry.easy to use and no harm will come to fry.with a net,the fry might get hurt etc....you may laugh but the syringe i use is for constipation in infants.works like a charm.i also find some fry grow faster than others but no need to be alarmed.just make sure the fry are eating and their bellies are pink.i normally take out the SMALLER fry and put them in another tank and feed them on their own till they get to a size where they can compete for food.hope my info helps timothy m
@timothy m - Thanks very much for the advice. I also read about using a turkey baster but thought my wife might get a bit upset with that. I like your idea of housing the smaller ones seperately and I was going to house them all in my breeding trap until I realised the holes in the bottom are bigger than the fry . Thanks for the help and suggestions. Marc
Fry are still going well. My wife and I have named the biggest one Fatty . Fatty is starting to look a lot like a gourami.
Hi @MarcHawke how are the gourami fry doing? Mine spawned about 2 weeks ago in my community tank but all the eggs got eaten
@llewellynkearney - Things didn't go so well. My tank got Hydra and they wiped out all but 3 of the fry. They are just over 30mm in size and showing the blue stripes. I hope/think 2 of them might be male from their behaviour. Hope so as I would like to breed them again. This time I will do it in the 100l which normally only has guppies, cory's and 3 lonely neons.
Aaah sorry to hear that but lukily they breed quite easy busy setting up a spawning tank for mine to see if i can get a sucsesful spawn
