Please post a pic with it in the tank. What is the purpose of those 2 pot looking things on the bottom?

Where did you get the sponge from?

 

2 pots was just to get the height for the tank and box right.

That HMF did not work, the bio load of the convicts mean is clogged way to fast ... but some of the first HMF's are still going strong.

How does the tank look? Any dirt that went back into the tank

 

Had more junk in the substrate than what I had in the sponge. HMF is a big surface area for bacteria, don't think of it as a pre-filter on a HOB that is typically used at higher flow rates and a finer sponge. A pre-filter traps more gunk .. an HMF if not meant to function the same hence the much bigger surface area per flow.



These HOB's and HMF has been going since mid 2010 - and here is where it shows when you spend a little extra on low power / quality right. The HOB being pimped like it is with media and actually only used to drive the HMF with some extra ceramics - so little chance of sand being sucked up, has performed reliable consider it only stops for the odd eskom failure.



The other great thing about using a HOB to drive a HMF .... (and this depends on you space around the tank) you need very little space behind the sponge - so a slab of sponge does not take up any more tank space than what is really needed.
