Help malawie cichlids

Fshygirl, if I can just address that. Fish, by means of excretion, release hormone into the water. It is the buildup of this hormone that restricts them to not 'outgrow' the tank. This can be countered by frequent water changes or a larger volume of water cycling through the tank. On the forum, members are mostly fish lovers. We care for the total well-being of fish, from a neon to a catfish. You wont be making friends when 'fishcare' is not your first goal. The fish might not 'care' but we dont want 'stunted' fish that swim around in their hormone infested living area. Thats why you get big tanks for big fish. I dont want to sound sexist, but furthermore you should bear in mind that Malawi's are very aggressive. You will probably often be required to euthanase hurt and damaged fish from the fighting that occur with these fish. Its not that it always happens, but these fish can and are definetly not for the faint hearted. Consider all this before you take the jump. Regards, Marco

 

k you guys are confusing me if i get rams and brichardi what other fish can i add?can the featherfin neons and eel stay? and do i need to change the gravel or something in my tank? i have a couple of plants must they go?? is three any chance i can add an african jewel??

 

The eel needs a fine substrate, pool filter sand or finer will do.

As for the Jewel, they are black listed!

Rams and Brichardi's together-NO! Get Rams and the other fish can stay. Brichardi's will probably harass the Neons. The Eel. . . I'm not sure if the eel will work. Not an Eel specialist (lol) Regards, Marco

 

Sorry about the space thing i didnt realise it harmed the fish but didnt somebody say they kept 13 malawis in a 55L like mine??

 

malawis would require harder water, so you gonna have to get some crushed coral as your substrate in any case. thats very expensive stuff. you could get argonite instead but thats even more pricey.

fshygirl, i would urge you to follow the advice of the people on this forum. if you go about this the wrong way you are gonna end up spending a lot of money and your fish will in all likely hood die.

malawis are beautiful fish, but if they are not housed in adequate conditions you may never see them develop their true colours (no pun intended).

 

Hi fshygirl. I think TM did, but he had 13 babies in the tank to grow to a size large enough to be put with the adults without them being eaten once there.

what can i keep with them?
Can i have plant and brichardis?
Can i keep arfican jewels with them?
Can i keep a Featherfin catfish with them?
can i keep a spiny eel with them?
what substrate do they need?
do they dig?

 

The best person to ask about Tanganyikans (Brichardi and the like) would be fishcrazy. He will agree to what has already been said and give you further information.

If you like those fish then you should get a proper size tank and find out about each fish and their requirements. You will then know which fish go together.

You don't seem to understand that we are giving you GOOD advice here.

It has already been said that you should use silica sand. I was also mentioned many times that African Jewels are Blacklisted! Meaning that they are illegal to keep, breed, sell, catch etc. Forget about this fish completely!

I am not satisfied that you are capable of caring for Cichlids just yet.
