Keep the canopy.. Don't cut. In the winter when your heater is working well but not too often you will thank me. Hoods and canopies help to keep a substantial amount of heat in
Canisters are expensive but you will be grateful.

Why not do a sump, there is plenty room under the tank, a 2 foot aquarium sump enough space for plenty media and heater, nothing but your suction and return in the tank and loads cheaper than a canister.

I had the same problem and then my wife went to Spain for a week and when she came home I had two more tanks and I said that refund would be impossible because they were filled with substrate and plants already hahaha

Sump....so much freedom. I have a HOB,, and with load shedding is a nightmare, as it doesn't flow without priming again. Luckily I run two filters.

Sumps are great. But if u can’t do one, and u need quick filter cleaning, I’d go hang on back. I’ve got an Aquaclear 110 and 70 on a 4ft African Cichlid tank and work extremely well - my cichlids are big.

Cleaning takes no more than 15mins and the filter self prime.

I spoke to the wife and likes the idea of a HOB filter. She likes the look of a tank, but doesn't like looking at this when sitting on the couch. o_O

My vote is a canister without a doubt I personally don’t like sumps but my opinion might change one day. Currently I have my canister and a additional sponge filter just because. A canister also means you can if wanted do really nice lily pipes or similar things if you’re after a really “clean” build. But as always that’s just my opinions.

I think it’s important to humour the spouses, especially when the tanks are right in our living spaces.
