Green terrors breeding

Once they free swimming around, you can move them to their own tank
I usually take a piece of thicker than normal air pipe.. must be about 1/1.5cm diameter and siphon them out

How quickly you need to take them out also depends on the parents.. if they eat the fry or not although eventually they usually do

With my acaras, i usually siphon the fry out at day two of being free swimming however the last batch which was unexpected as they spawned three times in a row, we left the fry with the parents nearly two weeks when we started noticing that they were starting to eat them
I have raised mine from start on the Tetra first bites until i had other live foods and they did very well

 

Thanks Maria, could i use a turkey baster to remove them? Do i move mom with them? Feeding micro worms now

 

I suppose you can try.. Im not sure if the tip is wide enough and if they wont run away
With the pipe, you create a siphon which just sucks them up and they dont get a chance to swim away

No, you dont take mommy with them because she willl eventually start eating them which is one of the reasons for taking the fry away from the parents

 

They should be free swimming by now.

I have never had any success moving the fry to their own tank.
They last a couple of weeks, while their numbers slowly decline.
If there are other fish in the tank that can predate on them however, it might be worth moving them.
Remember to have microworms available for them, or BBS.

I need help sexing my two green terrors please.

They are each approx. 10 to 12cm in overall length. I've had them in the tank for about 5 weeks now and since I put them in they've been happy and getting along fine until now. About a week ago with a water change I thought they were mating because they locked lips. For the past week however, the one has been chasing the other into a corner. The one is certainly more dominant than the other one.

Initially I thought one was a female and one a male because the one (male) has a slight bump on the head as opposed to the other one (female) and when I saw them locking lips I thought yeah its confirmed and its breeding time. Well, none has laid eggs yet, however the less dominant one does look as if she has a bit of a round stomach, so I thought she's carrying eggs waiting to lay them somewhere. But no eggs have been laid anywhere yet. Now I'm wondering if the lock lipping was a fight instead of mating.

I've looked at so many videos of sexing green terrors and now I honestly cannot tell if whether mine are both male, both female or male and female. The problem is if they are still young it's not easy to determine the sex accurately.

Below are some pictures. The first picture is the one which I thought was the male and the second which I thought was the female. Picture quality is not that good, but the one (first pic) does have a slight bump on the head. I would be disappointed if I had to remove one of them from my tank because they are both so tame and I've become quite fond of them (definitely my favourite fish in the tank).

 

Thats 2 males. The dominant one will get a bump on the head to show dominance.

Shape of the body and fins.

 

From research, I'm not 100% sure they are both males. Have a look at the white vertical bars which I read appears on females and the thin orange mark on the tails which I also read appear on females, males have a more thicker and distinct orange mark. However this is not always the case. I did notice that their top fins are not too short (for females) but they are also not that long (for males). But the slight bump on the head might suggests male.

 

The females is MUCH darker than the males.
