good filters

F-fish, I do agree with you - the sponge on the Filter intake, do not only prevent killing the fry, but also extend the filter-cartridge lifespan, and is a great mechanical pre-filter, that stop the intake from fouling up. I use it on all my filters - even the canisters!

"is there a way to extend the inlet pump" Windfire it should be fine - no need to have the intake all the way on the bottom and with your sand substrate ... probably better that it is not all the way.

well it looks like im going to have to get a new filter anyway we had a power cut yesterday and i completely forgot to check that my filter was full before i went to bed with the result that it ran dry for the whole night:amazed:. the power head was very hot this morning when i realised there was nothing coming out the over flow so i turned it off at the plug and am waiting for it to cool down and maybe if im lucky it'll still work i think its burned out though so ill probably have to make a run for the lfs later. because of the bio load of this tank i dont want to leave it without a filter for too long. maybe an internal would be betta for this now that i have a chance to play around

 

you won't go wrong with an internal filter, thats one of the advantages with the internal filters, don't have to worry about the filter running dry...i have both by the way, an internal and a HOB...sorry, to hear about your situation...just wondering, would the LFS reimburse you, i mean the motor burnt out because there was no water in there! but i'm sure your story would be of a different nature, lol...i know i've embellished the truth here and there, hehehe:bigsmile:

Hope it's not completely packed up... if not, I would still suggest getting an internal. If it ran most of the night, even if it's not burnt out now, it might have taken on some strain.

 

lol i wish i could embellish but one i dont have the slip and 2 im already trying to sort out the insurance claim for the stuff thats missing from my car, whys it missing you ask becos my car was stolen over the easter weekend grrrr. they recovered the car in Ladysmith but my varsity books and bag, radio, mp4, fav jacket and shoes are gone. i now have to get quotes for everything. i may even do a water change in a lil bit. would the internal be ok with the very fine sand though?

 

Yeah it'll be fine with the fine sand. I had one with my very fine sand. It might pick up a piece or 2, but don't stress.

can anyone tell roughly what the prices of internal filters are, im looking at buying one for my 3ft(100l roughly). Sadly my HOB is splashing water everywhere including the lighting. Are canister filters more economical?

 

They vary from R100 - R2500.00 depending on make, model, l/p/h etc

 

soo sinc epeople did not allow my tread on top 10 canisters il just steal this one ,so i have an option on fluval405 @2700
cascade 300-1000 liters @ 1450
ehiem professional 2 @2700
hagen elite 300 liter @2700

 

ideally i'd like a canister because of the space saving. Anyone purchased a filter recently can recommend a filter?
This is a 100l tank...

 

Speedz if you hav a little space either behind or next to the tank you can easily set up something like my diy sump. The sump itself would cost less than R50 just takes some time to build but then you build it to your liking and specifications adding bio and chem filtration and then you can go add a co2 reactor and heater to it. The only real expensive thing you need to buy is the powerhead and you can get that for about R200. Take a look at the diy sections plans are included and just modify to suit your needs.

I paid R156 (LOL) for a Resun internal biological filter. Yes i am a cheap skate but it works great!

Well i bought for my 100l but realized my hob in my 75 would suck up my zebras (happened before). So it is in my 75l now

 

im not sure if they still sell it but the smallest eheim classic canister filter would work great in the 100L !

otherwise get a powerhead with cartridges for filter media I have a via aqua powerhead that cost 200 and you can put 2 different types of media in the carridges!

I also have the biggest eheim pickup internal filter wich cost 600 and its great ! easy to clean and you can adjust the height , amount and direction of waterflow!

your best bet is to go to a pet shop find filters within your price range that have a output of 400 l/h to max 600 .
then come tell us the options here and we will choose the best one ?
