Glow or fluorescent fish

these pink angels are most probly injected with dy to get that colour
looks very pretty but i dout i want to be the one injecting the fish with dy once a year

 

The article say they genetically modified. Genetic modifications are selective breeding on a fast track, all you doing with selective breeding is waiting 100 generations to get the right fish, with genetics they just transforming the gene you want in a lab. Those that defend selective breeding look at a lot of the selective breeding tanks, how sterile they are, might as well be in a lab, all you doing is putting 100 generations through torture.

 

For Science, yes, but medical or any other, No. How would you know if the genetically manipulated / engineered thing is any good in the future? that it wont mutate to something else that is much more deadly.

We are not god, nor shall we try to be like god and mess with genetics, especially when it comes to diseases. Yes, development of specific drugs, etc. through genetics and research has saved so many lives, but also it has made diseases much more tolerant and resistant to our man made drugs.

Granted that the GM food is all around us, and has saved countless lives, economies and businesses, but it is still wrong. It is also better business for companies that cultivate GM products, as there are higher yeilds, etc. but is it for us a good thing to eat it?

There is a reason for fish being a specific colour, size, shape, etc. and with time comes changes to adapt to their environment. Now we as human, come and change the rules, just because "wow, they look nice in this colour or shape". That is us being selfish and a huge money making scheme, nothing to do with research, etc.

Selective breeding over time? Just look at the issues with dogs as example. Sharpei's get cataracts that need surgical removal by the age of 9mths, Gr8 Dane's can't be exercised (run freely) until they're 2yrs and need special diet to slow down growth or they won't get enuff bone density, Ridgebacks are prone to liver cancer. And so the list goes on, each breed or selectively bred species with its probs.

No, IMO, the non-harmful splicing in of a colour gene affecting nothing else is perfectly acceptable if you're into that sort of thing. And yes, it is transferable to the fry, so it's permanent.
Myself? I like the natural stuff even tho I have 1x fluo pink danio swimming around the tank.

I say: "Respect". Respect others opinions and preferences. After all, by what reference do we judge NORMAL?

 

Btw, if one goes and researches the topic of fluorecent GMO danios, one finds that they were indeed GMO'd for a purpose - to act as bio-indicators to high toxin buildup in water ecosystems.

Therefore a purpose. Nothing to do with pure money-making or playing god just because we can...

If it wasn't for genetics we would not be at the brink of growing viable artificial organs for transplantation as we currently are - a much-needed demand for all affected patients world-wide.
