    Thanks very much guys...

@tlchidau, no.... no one has bred them is SA.... Ii would be nice if that could happen but as top dog said if there are 20 in the country its already a lot.. I doubt there are even that many

They are almost impossible to sex and to best of my knowledge are bred in huge outside ponds where a lot of them are put in and allowed to pair off

As @Jwh said, Fish for Africa has a very nice Chili Red...

Guys... when you have a dream that you serious about... never give up..

Plan, save... you can do it!!!.
Maybe not now... maybe in time to come but it is possible... hey Im a lot older than you guys... its taken a long time to get there but with careful planing.. it can be done
I brought up my boys alone and bought my property alone but I saved a little every month for Flash
Instead of a 500.00 handbag I bought a 100.00 one.. every month i set something aside

Fist money went for his tank already over 3 years ago and then i carried on until Flash became a reality
If all goes well, Flash could outlive me but Im sure Cesar will take good care of him

    Hi everyone..

Its a few months since i have updated Flash's thread... so i thought the time has come, to do so...

Flash has grown and matured quite a lot in the last 4 months.... he has also developed typical asian arowana character and i have had to move some of his original tank mates around as, he is a bit of a bully now...
All the skittishness of a young arowana is gone and he is calm and self assured even when you wipe the glass
If you run your hand along glass, he follows it
Present tank mates that can handle him or he doesnt bully are my flagtail which is almost Flash's size, my clown loach family, my 2 large severums, 3 gold datnoids, 2 geos and my new rays...
The severums think will have to be moved as well eventually

Diet.. pellets are above him...plays with then and spits them out..
So.. he gets shrimp, fish, meal worms, earthworms, crickets...

As far as tanning goes absolutely no tanning has been done and all pictures are with daylight globes
I have been fortunate to make "friends" with a reputable breeder in Malaysia and have been given a lot of advice
In regards to tanning, they do not believe in it... sunlight... pure sunlight and good genes must bring the red if you want it to be permanent
Tanning is a quick fix but the red goes away once you stop tanning... so i have been told.... and i believe its not healthy for the fish in the long run.. again.. its the advice i have been given...
I have followed the advice and Flash's colour is developing on its own which i am happy with

He's becoming big now, not a puppy anymore. Does he allow you to pet him? It took me almost a year to get mine tame enough to touch.

Hi and welcome to the forum
Jonathan.. getting a permit to do it yourself is a hell of a mission... i tried.... they take for ever...
It is better to do it via a reliable source that has a standing permit to bring them in
This also safe guards you from scams on the web
Wazeer's and Fish for Africa are 2 LFS's on the East Rand that are brinnging in some good quality arowanas although they dont usually keep stock, you order they source, give you price and thenit usually takesabout 2 weeksat the moment
We got our last one just over a week ago, havent posted her yet.
    Much less hassle and risk.

Hahaha... certainly over the puppy stage!!!!
Yes, I can pet him no problem but he has eaten from my hand since a baby so it was easy to start petting him.
In fact he comes and rubs himself against my hand or arm if i am feeding the other fish
Also gets very upset if I dont feed him first and give him attention before I feed the others...

    Thanks @Reedfish...

We all think that what's ours is stunning but I have to say that he/she is trully beautiful
I also now understand a bit more as to why they mean so much to the Asian people... their character is something you have to see to understand
They watch you like a hawk where ever you are and the expression in their faces is almost like they want to talk to you
If I sit where he can see me he will sit dead still and watch for ages.
He will rub imself against the glass asking for attention and its not food driven as you can feed and he wont eat
They are quite something over and above their beauty....

Does flash also get jumpy when it gets hot? My silver starts to jump when the water goes over 27c. Last night he woke me up twice again, it was 37 at my place on Monday and upped the temp to 29c, he's not very happy right now, swims fast and knocks on the glass, he likes it at 24-25c. He also doesn't eat well when it's this hot, he hits the prawn very hard then just spits it out, weird...

He grew well this summer, gained over 10cm in length and 5cm in height pushing just over 60cm now. And to think I though he was a big fish when I got him at 40cm, that's still a baby when it comes to silvers haha. To be honest he's starting to push the limits now, another 10cm and I'm in trouble. Tank break trouble. The tank was swaying last night, not a pretty sight.
