Fish room finally in sight.

I have charcoal grey acrylic paint that's used for waterproofing. Will that be fine?

Hey guys, I'm still alive... Not much progress on the fishroom as of yet regarding new tanks. Work kept me pretty busy the last few months before Christmas last year. Also ended up not even going to JHB and just took some time for myself. I'm working from home during this lockdown period so no free time for me at all.

I must apologise for not giving updates but all that has really changes wss the malawis moved to the 120l tank that had the stained water and the 150l sump tank is empty again...

Thanks you all.. Will post pics once the planted tank gets a good clean.. I've been neglecting it for a while except I took out all the giant Hygro. It covered the tank and some plants suffered not getting enough light, to add to that, my co2 is finished and obviously I can't get now... There is also a huge outbreak of bba so it's gonna need a proper clean. As for the fish and shrimp... They all doing well!!

 

Honestly, I don't even know where to start with the tank. I do have h2o2 but I'm to scared to use it. I've read that shrimp are quite sensitive to it. I also don't know if my filter will need a clean. Hopefully not, I don't want to cycle the tank again.

Ill gather some info and start with it ASAP.

 

H202 - you can suck some up with a syringe to shoot it over BBA areas, much like with Excel.

Also make sure you know the strength of H202 - pharmacies sell 3%, 6%, 9% and 12%, and most videos will reference the 3% (US I believe only get 3%).

I use 1ml H202 (3%) for every 10l actual tank water (make sure to factor in displacement) for a mild algae treatment. For very stubborn algae, 3.3ml for every 10l. That dose, if I remember right, will kill beneficial bacteria though, so I'd remove some filter media if ever you do that.
Anyway, check that video out- I found it helpful when first using the stuff. Perhaps test on a minimal risk tank to start...

As for the cleaning of the plants etc I will use a bleach solution. I usually clean new plants like that so I'm confident with bleach. I will most likely remove everything from the tank and some bba will remain on the substrate. If I don't kill it all it will just start again..

 

I have used H2O2 before. I used 5 ml per 100l. Turn the filter off, and squirt the H2O2 onto the BBA. Bubbles will form as oxygen is released and fish and shrimp will go investigate but dont worry about them. After a minute or 2 you can turn the filter on. This is a spot treatment so you will need to repeat to rid your whole tank of BBA. You will have to do this daily as I wouldnt dose more than 5 ml once a day. It may be easier to catch all the livestock out and dose a large amount in 1 go depending on how bad and how big your tank is. The BBA should go pink after a few days and then the shrimp/snails will eat it.

 

H2O2 breaks down into oxygen and water. It also kills bacteria in a high enough concentration which is why I prefer to let it react until no bubbles are present and then only turn the filter back on. Dosing it directly onto something works to kill it, when the fish/shrimp swim to the bubbles they are fine and show no ill effects.
