It is not recommended that they breathe air, they MUST breathe air. Whilst Bettas do well in waters with a low level of dissolved oxygen, that does not mean they require less oxygen than other fish. Bettas have a special respiratory organ that allows them to breath air directly from the surface. In fact they inherently must do so. I have read of experiments being done where the labyrinth organ was removed (don't ask me why they would have done this experiment but they did for some reason) - the fish died from suffocation even though the water was saturated with oxygen. For this reason, Bettas must have access to the water surface to breath air directly from the atmosphere.

Arowanas are an obvious fish to have a *heavy* cover on the tank. I keep my Computer Skills textbook which I never use to keep the canopy in place for when he does jump.

I can back up the claim that red-tailed and redfinned sharks jump; I once had one jump through the feeding hole into my lap while I was watching the tank from the floor . Lucky fish that :)

i disagree with this, the water surface needs to be broken for it to be oxygenated.

bubbles streaming thru the water dont actually oxygenate the water, but when the bubbles break the water surface ,it allows the water "skin" to be broken, thereby allowing and exchange of gases to take place at the surface, and oxygenating it.

thats why wider water surface to depth, means higher oxygen content in the water, its because more surface area is available to be oxygenated.

You did not understand what I was saying....

If you are planning on covering your betta tank with glass, insert an air line in between the glass and surface of the water. Connect the air line to a pump and you have an air supply. The air line does not go below the water neither does if fracture the water surface

I have 2 7cm bala sharks in my 6 foot tank, now in my tank I don’t hav a sump just a 3 small separate compartment for heaters and filtration and for a few days now I can’t find my bala sharks , and just yesterday I found them in the filter compartment in the tank, I have no idea how they could have gotten in there, now I know they jump but there is no space for them to have jumped in there, I am just glad they are still alive.

I have seen my bettas beath trought air pockets under amazon leaves so if you can create a fluval edge look but with a small enought place for them to breath should work or even a pipe sort of thing so even if they jump they will go up the hole and fall back in the tank

,arowana are jumpaholicz my lfs friend lost his @R2500 that thing was huge

I know my platys and Kuhli Loach jump.

If some of them are missing and I cant find them in my tank then I always find them in the filter section of my tank. The somehow manage to jump over the small gap from the tank.

It then takes me about 30 minutes + to get them out.

P.S The tank is a boyu TL-550... so if you are farmiliar with the tank then you will know what I am talking about :p

Here is a list of fish that I have seen often jumping out of aquariums: all Barbs, Plecostomus Catfish, Goldfish Comets, Swordtails, Cichlids, Eels, Sharks, Loaches, bettas, mollies, ropes, danios and Elephant Noses. Crabs will crawl out unless the aquarium is escape proof!
