    hi, yes for me, both 'rep power' and 'rep points' are important. it does lend credibility to a member when they are posting something, it kind of says to me " yes, i could believe what this guy says, he's been active and the fact that he has rep power / points means that some other people has agreed with many of his statements. often when a thread goes into "debate mode" its a bit easier to see who kinda knows what they are talking about, for example, you could get someone with few posts but quite a high rep power, this would tell me that the person might not be a someone who loves posting just for the sake of posting for example, but when he posts, its normally good advice. take @f-fish for example. not a billion posts, but high rep, and when he says something you can see that the high rep is justified.

    Agreed with everything said thus far. The only thing I would like to add is how the rep points are given. A lot of people don't know how this works and indeed if it exists at all. I agree with what @mydummyname said about this system. I however don't think it's fair to award rep points to someone who has lots of rep in a post just for the sake of bowing down to that person. Blind loyalty has to be overlooked in my opinion. There is lots of good advice given in posts that does not get awarded. We push the boundaries every day in this hobby.
    :cheesy:
    If I do something good and share it, there will allways be someone who does it different than me. This doesn't mean I am wrong, or the other person is wrong at all. This only states that different tactics exist in the hobby. I am merely asking that the rep points be looked at differently. By looking at rep points one automatically asumes the person with the most is more credible. As if the other person participating in the debate does not know a thing. This is wrong in my opinion and goes exactly against why people want to be part of this comunity. We all want to learn from each other here and I am glad to be part of this comunity. Someone who has 0 rep points can also have something you (the guys with the high rep) can learn from. I am in no way stating that high rep guys didn't deserve it. Cudo's for you getting that far in the hobby and on this forum. It takes hard work and dedication for this hobby to even exist at all. And I don't want to step on toes here. I believe I am not the only one who see things this way. So if the Mods could maybe explain the Rep points process in future it could also help.:cool:

    As a new member, I can say that the rep power/rep points thing is very confusing... I can see the button to give rep at the bottom of the posts, but I have no idea what it does. Is it rep power or points? What's the difference? How does it work?

    It's just confusing for me, I definitely think you need to have a single system for reputation that is easy to understand. Without knowing more about how it works, that's my 20c.

    @SloMo.00.

    hi, there is a thread somewhere which specifially shows how rep points are awarded.. if i can find it i'll post a link.

    i think the first thing to realise is that nobody has to bow down to anyone who has a higher rep, and i dont think its ever expected, i know i never do, but if you look carefully at what people psot, you can see that guys with the higher reps really do deserve it - mostly.

    especially for someone who is very new to the forum and to fishkeeping, it does give some sense of who knows what they are talking about, and i can tell you , i've seen a lot of people who really speak absolute rubbish and give terrible terrible advice to some members, so there is definitely a use for rep points in my opinion. for example, a guy who says its ok to keep a school of neons with an oscar will never get good rep point for that post or anything similar. someone who give very good practical advice is more likely to get good rep points..

    its kind of a guage, it gives you a feel, and i have to admit, i am glad @Zebra Pleco is removing the negative rep option, altho i've been tempted to, i've never actually given anyone negative rep, altho i've been given negative rep once for wishing someone happy birthday. maybe he didnt like my face. lol

    another thing to consider is that rep points are not given by admin or mods, but by us members ourselves, we give it to one another when we feel someone has made a good contribution or advice to a thread.. (you do this by clicking on the star below a person's name in his post) so really if someone has high rep, its his own peers who have given that to the person and i think that more than anything shows that he does deserve it.

    there is no biase between mods or admins who decide who deserves rep. its us members.

    also no-one expects a new member to have high rep points instantly, but that doesnt mean anyone is gonna be looking down at that guy and think, he's a newb with 0 rep points and we not gonna listen to what he says, as a newb learns and starts contributing positively, the rep points come. then there are new guys who really know what they are talking about and you can see the rep points come quicker..

    there are newbs who dont have much experience iin fish keeping, but through using common sense, logic and intelligence have contributed massively to the forum, and where i see that, i will always award the rep points, newb or not.

    my 2c :)

    I must say on the emoticons that I really do find they help with the friendliness/tone of posts. Anyone that knows me here will know that I generally like to post humourous light comments (at least I think I'm funny :laugh:) and the emoticons help. Whilst we are on the "look" of the site, what are the things under our names ie @mydummyname has balala shark and I think mine says neon?

    @SloMo.00. ironically here's a good example, if you look under your user cp on the homepage, you will see that i gave you some rep points a day or 2 ago, as i thought you had a real good idea on the black ruby barbs and green tiger barbs.. you got the rep coz i thought that was an awesome combination in terms of how the two schools, red and green fish, would look in a big tank. i still cant get that pic out of my mind and i have since made a similar suggestion to @Reedfish for his 5ft tank.

    @Zebra Pleco, i think it would be better to remove the "mentioned" bit, as i dont care how many times someone is mentioned, but i do care what type of contribution they have made to the forum, that is to say, their rep points.

    @Zebra Pleco - How about a block that shows hrs on the site. Wouldn't mean much more than how much time we "waste" on the site but it could be fun?

    I agree 100%. This issue just keeps popping up everywhere. That is what I am trying to say. It shouldn't even be an issue at all.

    @SloMo.00. ,

    There was a similar thing on a specialist fish forum that I am on. The rep just caused so many arguments, which was just petty, so the whole thing was taken off that forum for the sake of peace. :fight:

    @mydummyname - I know weekends are quiet but I don't know? The site has been pretty quiet the last week. I know a lot of members have left recently (not sure what happened) but still...

    I asked a few Q&A's a day or two ago and got 1 response from Wyvren. Oh well...
