    @Fishie Mitchie

    Morning!

    My remaining betta "Blue" is doing very well. He even started making a bubble nest, which unfortunately I had to break up to install a UGF until my sponge filters arrive. A fellow fishy friend found some small ones for me in George. Very thankful for that! "Blue" hasn't started building a new nest, guess he's still getting used to the current in his tank.

    My female bettas are all doing well. They are enjoying the community tanks and everything in there that they can investigate. Bought a beautiful red one yesterday. They make for colourful additions to my tank and have plenty of attitude. All the other fish with attitude are simply too big for my tanks.

    I want to drive out to Jungle Aquatics some day and go have a look at their Betta. It's a 120km drive there and back...In our lfs I can only find crowntail and veil tails. Would love a HM!

    Thanx for the follow up, much appreciated!

    Glad to hear that your bettas are doing better now so you only added ugf in their tanks, nice one.

    Good luck really hope they all get better and stronger.

    Sorry for the late reply.

    @Dinky an ugf is the last thing I would consider putting into a fish tank. The biggest problem with them is the fact that should you have a power failure or your air pump packs up, all the bad bacteria & ammonias that have been pulled through the gravel to the filter are all re-released back into your tank which, in turn land up poisoning your tanks and fish.

    I use a corner platform filter in my breeding and Betta tanks with great results. The only thing I don't do is put charcoal into the filter for the same reason that I don't use ugf's. I use filter wool and the ceramic rings, it works like a charm and keeps the water nice and clean too.

    Hope this helps, even if it is a little late.

    Glad to hear "Blue" is doing well. Are you going to breed with him?

    Keep us updated.

    @Rawson

    Thank you!

    I would like to try my hand at breading some time in the future but I have a lot to learn from now till then.

    For now I'm concentrating on keeping my fish happy and alive! Lol!

    Do you keep Betta?

    @Skye01

    Thank you very much, I really appreciate the reply.

    Hmmm....that's the first reason for not having a ugf that someone has presented me with that makes me understand why people are against them. My tanks running on them are much clearer and cleaner than my one running on a hob alone and I couldn't understand what people have against them. I almost went out and bought one for my big tank yesterday.

    A fishy friend managed to find me some small internal sponge filters, will that work? Do I take out the ugf when I receive them or do I run both?

    Just started 5 weeks ago. Did alot of research on the net, watched almost every youtube video I could find. Finally I took the plunge and went down to Durban and bought myself 1x Double Tail male, 1x Veil Tail male and 2x female. After 2 weeks of conditioning them I put the pairs in there breeding tanks and let them court each other for a few days. The Double Tail pair went straight and did there thing. The Veil Tail pair just wanted to kill each other both male and female.

    Still haven't had luck with the Veil Tail Pair, but the Double Tail pair have just bred again. Love all my babies, and it's very rewarding to watch your Betta's breed.

    I keep my girls in tanks with my young guppy's, which keep them happy and fat (Not from eating the Guppies, from the many feed time, 3-4times a day). The males I keep in the breed tanks at the moment, will need more tanks soon as I don't like to keep the males with the babies to long, so keep moving them to new tanks.

    But keep at it, I am having lots of fun and I am sure you will get just as much reward from doing it as I do. Keep in touch and I'll try help you where I can and you can help me where you can.

    I must admit that I don't have too much experience with these filters, but I do believe that they are pretty good for helping the babies as they store up a whole lot of good bacteria and particles which the babies then feed off of, people I know have had a really good baby growth rate as a result of this. I battled with them for a while, I really struggled to get them to sink and stay in place so I opted for the small round bio filters & my baby angels are doing very well with this filter.

    I'm not sure of the exact size of @Dinky's tanks but I think it mentions on the box which size tanks it is capable of filtering, just have a look at that.

    @Dinky, I have learned the hard way with ugfs & trust me there is nothing worse than losing an entire tank of fish because the filters released all the gunk back into the water.

    Hope this helps...

    Thanks for the informative thread. Setting up betta tanks for my daughters and really want to avoid the trauma of losing fish.

    Can someone tell me more about the rooibos tea bag remedy. Is this something you keep permanently in a tank with the betta or just when he is in stress?

    I had used it when fins are nipped, you keep a baggie in at night and remove the next day, but im not sure how many bags per volume. Also read many people use teabags even if nothing is wrong , did work great for ripped fins

    @AquaAddict

    Most people are concerned about what the Betta would do to other fish but I have found it to be the other way around. I have found Bettas to be peaceful with most species aside from their own. I have replied to your thread and hope it helps.
