I also took the plunge to backyard mineralised soil yesterday whilst cycling. Hoping to see lush growth soon.

Actually that would be a Natural Planted Tank (NPT) or dirt tank. i.e. beginning bits of Walstad, all organics are broken down in the tank.

Mineralised top soil (MTS) is the process that sees most the organics broken down outside of the tank and additional minerals added as required. See http://visual.ly/how-mineralized-soil-substrate as one of the many examples.

thanks Ferdie, as I said the science escapes me somewhat.

What I can say for sure Is that since Sunday I can see positive growth in everything that went in, so It seems to be working.

I use organic potting soil in all my tanks just remember don't get to small gravel. Cause it will sink. Into the potting soil I did that once so make. Sure gravel is not a fine kind

Best news ever, nothing like playing in your tank and seeing the results.

Only reason why I pointed out the method difference, loads of guys say MTS or NPT does not work and then when one has a working example being able to correct them really does help to resolve loads of confusion. Esp when it comes to Walstad EI method, Our locally grown PFP or OC+ and PFS or Low vs High tech .... he he he I think you get the point.

But truly what ever works for you - make sure you keep telling guys that, like I love my HMF filters - but that is another thread.
