Hey, thanks for the input! It was really rewarding (and ate into too much of my Masters research ) The glass I bought was cheap - R14 per 61x32 cm pane.
I have shrimp breeding in my tank in Durban - I've lost my ancistrus to them, lol. But they get along well with my khuli loaches. Not thinking of importing shrimp - I've spent too much already. I'm looking for local suppliers rn.

I will probably end up doing something similar to those LED strips in the future.

I noticed that you made the light stand out of chip board. Unfortunately they are moisture magnets if not sealed properly. If this is temlorary it will be fine but for the long run it will not last.

    Pleasure bud,

    Where are you based?
I can send you some shrimp, take a look at my other post to see what you want. I only have wild tiger and red sakura, then the mix between the two. :)

Wife and I agreed on a budget of R400 a month on this hobby, (you would fall out your chair when you find out what I spend on my ex mushroom culture hobby) I already over spend on k1 for this month and for the tank I want to build I can see saving for a few months.

Ps. Masters? Wow in what field?

Sad to say but I agree, I have seen ply wood being used but then you need coat/ treat (not sure on terminology) well with like a pond coating. Maybe if I remember I'll send a link.

You guys may also be interested in this, it's a full plywood tank!

You can do full plywood, and seal it. Lots of threads on Monsterfishkeepers

That nano tank is cool! Gonna stock fish?

Based in Stellenbosch, Paradyskloof - but I'm from Durban. Nice shrimp - I like the red sakura, will look great against my black gravel. You selling them?

I'm a microbiologist, but for MSc I decided to go for a more interdisciplinary approach - doing an "MEng ChemEng (research)". I'm part of a group doing research on micropollutants (pharmaceuticals, illicit drugs, endocrine disruptors, antibiotics, etc) found in our surface waters that are not removed efficiently during wastewater treatment. We have hundreds of these compounds (and their metabolites) in our water in trace amounts that have been shown to have potentially harmful effects on fauna and flora. If you'd like, I can tell you about my specific project, but it will be very technical.

Thanks! Still thinking about what fish to stock (if any, must be compatible with shrimp). A betta would be nice, or endlers, CPDs... Also keen for a snail. Local guy is selling ramshorns but I need to get some malaysian trumpet snails for the substrate. I'm just worried that if I put them in, with the rich organic substrate, they will breed like mad. Anyone have experience with this?

In my shrimp tank small snails keep on popping up even though the big ones are gone, I can keep some for you if you want. These are ramshorn

Nothing is completely shrimp safe, bettas may cause them to hide. CPDs should be good though, babies may be eaten though :)

    Hey,

Pm me and we can chat, I am only selling them to pet shops at the moment and they intern are selling them for R40 each.

Since you are part of this forum, and so far I have found the people very generous here and I trust you are not going to try undercut my business, I will give you a special price :) you just need to cover shipping. :) PM me so I know how many you need and what you can afford.

As for your work, to be honest with you I have an inquiring mind, perhaps I could skype you some time on a weekend and you could explain it face to face?

    Regards,
    St. John

Hi Thanks for sharing. Very interesting to see your progress. Just wondering if you are using the potting soil substrate only or have you covered the substrate with a gravel?

    Regards

Update: got a hitchhiker. Pond snail? I'm pretty stoked I have 1X livestock now - probably a lot more in the coming weeks! Also, getting some good new growth on some of the plants.00de0a4b7066b0458e5243dc9992d2e7.jpg706a4f6e848948f5dd6262c6043d368a.jpg6b6006a48f0eccd0c38b800525205345.jpg

Looks like a bladder snail, not a pond snail.
    Nothing to worried about.
