I had to do several intensive searches to find any post on Dark Knight Rams. I just got mine here in Canada about mid February. I have had several spawnings and I too have found the the fry range from black to normal in colour. Happy to hear a few generations of selective breeding will bring the desired results of a true breeding black strain. Congratulations on your breeding results and post.

    Hi

    @ eros111 - hardly, but thank you

    @Bwhiskered
Thank you for the congratulations and welcome.
I have now learned a bit about the genetics of the dark gene and can help with the following
As long as you are having mixed coloured fry it means the parents are not homozygoes.
You need to select from your offspring the right ones to breed to each other in order for you to get to pitch black offspring that actually breed true
Now part of the problem with that is that the total black fry are weaker and die off easily. You may find only one or 2 in a batch of 350 that make it. These are the ones you must keep back and eventually breed to each other.
If not you will continue to have the mixed fry without any being completely black. I think at the moment you still have fish that look like dark German blues?
    Maybe post a photo here

In this photo here you can see all fry are black. Only at about 8 week age does all the colour disappear and the become completely black.

Thanks for the interest and I am.sure you will get there

    Rgds

That's a huge batch of fry!
    Well done

Is there a big enough market for them in SA?

    Even for 2 spawns there's a LOT!!!!

You certainly have "fish fingers" instead of "green fingers"!!!
    Just joking....

    Well done...

Thanks for the information. I have all ready found that some larger spawnings also have smaller and weaker fry. Israel is sending out back crosses to keep the fish strong. I am sure I will get a pure strain going in do time. Nothing is worth while without a challenge.

    Marcos,
Are these available for shipping to the USA? Are you aware of anyone who has received them? I live in both Arizona, USA and Sonora, Mexico. I kept rams for many years, having successfully bred them. I'd like to keep a few nice ones as a hobby now (don't have the resources for a good comprehensive breeding program).

    Hi @ODwyerPW,

I am not aware of true "Dark Knights" being available in the USA.
I have seen many posts and been in discussion with a few people across the USA, and what seems to be available in North America is what is now called "Black Ram". I developed the Dark Knights from rams which carried the same genetics, but the ones that are circulating by you guys are still a while away it seems. They still do not breed true and are not solid black in colour.
On Facebook there is a Group called 'German blue and Bolivian Ram enthusiasts' - on there are a few US-residents that have the variety I mention.

    Best regards

    Good day,

Excuse me, please read the thread you quoted properly. The Dark knight Ram, as shown in this photo was developed and named by me.
I am very well informed of the state of Ram breeding in the USA, and are on several groups and forums. The "Dark knights" available in the USA are not true to form. There may of course be some, but I have been helping various people across the USA in this regard.
You are welcome to join the German and Bolivian Ram group on Facebook to be up to date with facts.

Please verify your facts before making false statements.

    Best regards
