A handful or ten babies. If I can just get them beyond wriggler for once, I'd also be happy

Don't know what happened with these eggs? Same parents, yet this time during their last spawn, there were only a handful of dead eggs. Could it be the leaf that they chose to lay on? Last time they laid on a non porous clay slab.

did the parents stay and fan the egg, were they fertilized properly, perhaps the leaf had some decay on it.... lots of possibilities that could go wrong in a general tank

The parents are still both fanning and guarding the eggs together. The leaf is quite fresh. Nothing else has changed since the last spawn. The only difference is the surface they've laid on. I suspect that the male may have missed fertilizing some of the eggs due to the leaf swaying about. Or could it have something to do with the fact that the rows are not as neat as they would be on a rigid surface? Could it be that the male orientates or aims himself visually from the bottom of the row, then swims upwards in a straight line to maximize fertilization percentage? It would stand to reason that a swaying leaf would have several missed eggs?

Yes breeding this way will have its pitfalls.

    Agree.
With most spawnings there may be some eggs that don't get fertilised, or succumb to fungus etc.

I also think that by not having a dedicated breeding setup, it's making it more difficult.

I agree with what has been said
Somehow the mouth brooders breed easly in a Community tank, I guess because they carry the eggs in their mouth
The egg layers, I have had no luck in the Community tank...

Maybe the male wasn't ready to fertilize the new batch? It's only been a week or so since the last lot. I can't think of another reason why there would be such a big diffs in the number of viable eggs. There are only about 5% that haven't turned white yet.

You will never get a big success like this bru. Im growing my angels out in planted tank but my breeding will be done bare bottom on a racking system.

This way is just to much of a chalange to me.

But maybe you will still prove me wrong.

I don't think so @Broder, sperm replacement takes 24 hours so I really dont think that was the problem... Maybe Im wrong..
Your 'moving leaf' theory is more feasable to me than the male not being able to fertilize the eggs a week apart.
But I guess you will never know for sure

My geos and electric blue acaras spawned 3 times wthin a few days of each other and all 3 spawns were sucessfull
My severums.. well.. their eggs just vanished every time but the male did fertilize them and that was also 3 times in a row but in a community tank...

    @Broder,

Do you know the kh and gh of your water?
Are you using fertilisers for your plants?

Water with a high hardness is known to diminish fertilisation of eggs in soft water fish. (Discus are very susptable to this)
And the minerals in certain plant fertilisers could also be contributing to the problem

Thanks @Reedfish. I'll have a look if I still have a test kit, but I don't think that we have particularly hard water in EL.

With Angels, I don't think it's as much of an issue as Discus.
But it could be something to bear in mind.
