Thanks so much guys and gals. When they say nothing changes you more than holding your child for the first time, they were not lying.

Baby and mom doing very well. Baby is 3 weeks prem, and for those of you who have followed along with us will understand the troubles we've been through. Even whilst our doc was doing the caesar she was bragging to all the nurses, aneathatist and peadiatrician that this baby she's about to take out is a living miracle.

As Henk so rightfully posted, he was a healthy size, and he shocked the doctors, nurses and midwives at how big, strong and vocal he is for his prem age.

And guys, dont knock @Dirk Bellstedt on his knowledge on breast feeding. I can tell you in all honesty that even though the sucking reflex is a natural reflex for baby, it is definitely not an easy task for mom and baby to learn to do this together. Baby Joel spent most of the day learning with mommy on how to get his food... and sadly a huge amount of wind got taken in... and as you all know, wind equaly cramps, which equals really unhappy baby. We seems to possibly be making progress, but I would gladly accept (and hereby ask for) any advice you have to share.

I can also honestly tell you that the nurses, doctors and midwives helping my wife at Flora are angels ins disguise, and have been absolutely and truelly amazing.

I will post more pics of him later when the dust is more visible to see through. The picture that Henk posted (thanks again Henk) was taken literally a few minutes after he was born.

This breastfeeding thing has had me stresed out all day. If Joel doesnt eat, his blood sugar drops. Thus he sleeps more, and therefore doesnt eat. As you can see, it can be a downward spiral. As my wife is adiment she is going breastfeeding all the way, the nurses cannot feed him with bottles as this will confuse him from latching. Last night the only way the nurse could get food into him was to actually pump the food insto his stomach, that way he doesnt taste formula, nor use a bottle teet.

They had to pump his stomach out last night, because he had a lot of amniotic fluid in his stomach. Amniotic fluid takes a really long time to work through the system, so with this amount fluid in him, he wouldnt be getting hungry, and thus his glucose levels drops. So whilst they had the tube in last night to pump his stomach, they forced some formula in afterwards.

The nurse assisting today gave us a small trick.. squirt literally halft a millilitre of formula in his mouth, which will suddenly spark the suckling reflex and the stomach juices. As he tastes the formula, he will open his mouth wide for more, and at this point you latch him on. This is what ultimately got him a decent evening feed.

Im very keen to hear your tips Professor.

Congratulations @Zoom and partner may you have many happy times together.

i hope you'll get his prints done. my mom and i used to process the Plop baby prints which are their hands and feet pressed in to very soft clay, fired and oxided so you can see all the lil wrinkles then framed with the name and birth date. we did hundreds and it was so cute to see some of the really tiny ones, a really nice gift for the grandparents too.

and remember sand, ants and fish food are staple kids food once toddling hehe.
