I am not so sure about this tank of mine any more. Its small volume is causing havoc with the direct sunlight and rain etc. Time to make a plan ...

@f-fish why not try having natural light but not direct sunlight. mine gets no sunlight now in summer but gets bright indirect light from my windows and i have yet to have an algae outbreak.

Makes sense ... ignoring the comp thing ... I am using this as an opportunity to see what the impact is on plants that did well under tubes and CFL's vs prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. Funny algae was not the problem - the big temperature swings caused some fish deaths - these went unnoticed while I was in Bloem for a week. So I am looking to stabilise it all by increasing the water volume - did this this afternoon .. lets see how it goes now. Would seriously love to post some pics ;-)

One of my plants just started growing runners and in 4 days I have to move the setup :) Always when things just start looking up.

Checked mine the other day and realized its more of a long term setup, meaning it will only look really good over time.

But will be keeping it this way after the comp to see what is will really look like in the end.

cant wait for the reveal! i'm not doing too bad, thinking of changing my filter to a HOB to give me a smidge more space to work with. i'm so amped that my my pixie lilles are sending out surface leaves my betta loves it he's building a huge bubble nest under the first one. now if i can get them to flower before the end of the comp that would be a real personal achievment! and really exciting to see the flower colour.

ok so i'm not fiddling any more i swear lol. i got the HOB and i cant believe the amount of space it frees up, i alo completely stripped the moss off my log and scraped the super glue off. i'd forgotten what a nice piece it was. i may up the ferts but other than that i'm happy for now lol

Yeah HOB's are really under rated ... that added water volume from the downer tanks has made a big difference considering adding some fish back before the final planting. If the submission is the 26'th then I am keen to see if I can get one grow-in done in 21 days or so ..

Hehehe @windfire - I would love to put a HOB on my Jebo's. But then again I know both my tanks have decent filtration. Even if the pipes are in the way a little bit. But I am planning my cube (depends on xmas bonus tho) which will have the HOB filter.

Ive actually stopped my excel in my comp tank since some of my plants didnt like it at all :(

LOL!!! @windfire - It is the reason I decided to import the stuff... If you look at what they do, it's incredible. Seriously. It's the reason I got into planted tanks. If you check out the new Aqua-journal, it explains layout and how to use rocks, wood and plants to your advantage. The Aqua-Journal is a brilliant piece of reading material!

A quick update... I decided to try something different for my comp tank, so I took out a huge wad of my moss and I was busy working with it when I came across tiny, clear shell eggs with itsy bitsy eyes looking out at me... I kinda had a heart attack, now what....? Well every time I came across a piece with eggs on I dashed and put it into my "baby tank". After taking forever to sort the eggs out of the moss so that I could continue with my intended plan, but I'm pleased to announce that I now have 2 VERY TINY babies swimming around on the top of the tank, as well as about 10 Panda Cory eggs that have hatched. As for the newbies, I don't even have a clue as to what they are because the moss came out of my 3ft Community Tank, there are so many possibilities of what they can be, Head Standers, X-Ray Tetras, Emperor Tetras, etc, etc,

It seems that the conditions in the tank are ideal, hence the breeding, but now I have to check all my plants...

Sorry Sean J, no such luck... Well I do have 1 dwarf Neon Rainbow, but I don't think that he can do it all on his own... Things are looking promising in my 6ft with my Kutubu Rainbows. My dominant male keeps chasing the female off to the one corner and into a plastic plant there, but so far I've seen no eggs...:sad2: Well, I will keep hoping and if I have success I'll let you know first.

From not knowing what to do with the babies, I have so far successfully raised 3 x "Pond" fish and 1 x Norman's. Now that was a huge surprise, but I finally figured it out. I moved a basket of hairgrass from my 3ft into my 1ft and the eggs must have been in there, so viola... little fishies. Oh yes, not forgetting my little Kribs as well...

LOL! I still don't really know how to deal with baby fish... Although, I did breed quite a few apistos, and grew a few out to adults. Once you get the hang of it, it makes life so much easier. I have been looking into different ways of hatching Brine Shrimp as well. The Coke bottle method is very messy, but very effective. There are a few other ways, but not as effective as coke bottles. Baby Brine shrimp are awesome food for baby fish!
