Canister Shock

@JCL, I agree or you might get a shock and not be around anymore. Strange that the seals on the canister would let water and elec meet. the electrical is normally a sealed unit.....

 

this canister has been in use for a very long time.

probably due for a replacement. I suppose wear and tear is typical in anything in constant use.

 

That is exactly why I asked to see this canister.
I got the same one (amongst a string of other ones too), usually the impeller pushes the water through and the motor is completely encapsulated so the motor coil wiring does not come into contact with water.
So perhaps the motor casing is cracked (inside) or perhaps there is another explanation.
Heaters and/or powerheads and wave makers are usually the problem children when it comes to electricity in water tanks.

 

A bit busy atm, will see later on whether I can find the link to the MASA thread or post some information from it.
But in essence what you need to do is connect the tank water to your earth.
So you need to establish a direct electrical path from the water to your earth which is the big fat connector in your plug and socket.
So a wire from the water to a 3pin plug using only 1 conductor connected to the fat pin in the middle and plugged into your wall plug or extension will do the trick.
Only problem is that you can't put a copper wire into the water (not good for fish and inverts), so best to use a stainless steel rod inside the tank connected on the outside to your copper wire which goes to your plug.
Some peeps have taken stainless steel welding rods, grind (or sand) the welding compound off and use the rod inside their tank.

It is highly advisable to earth your tank. I've got a piece of stainless steel rod, 6mm dia, hanging in the water. That is connected to insulated electrical cord (not open earth wire) and straight to the earth ( the big prong) of a plug and into my multi-plug. This helped me when a heater cracked and tripped the power. Just make sure the earth leakage of the house is working properly.

but it is a once in a lifetime expense ... don't knock it till you have tried it.

Was actually looking at all my power cords and stuff in the fish room, nothing runs on earth, all of them are Live-Neutral, wood floor helps, maybe not when it is wet.
