@Charles glad to see you having success, your males are stunning and as for that white CT female she is gorgeous. do you have any fry for sale at the moment? i'm looking to expand my sorority by 2 and want some really colourful ladies of anything other than blue as i already have 2. i tried just after getting my first betta to understand betta genes and how they get passed on whats dominant over what and so forth and got hopelessly confused. the pics on the site i used were a joy to behold though lol

i just had a look through the pics you have of the SDTxHM spawn and the greens are exactly what im looking for. do you still have them? i've been looking for a green betta since i saw Vis's one year before last. they stunning and its become abit of an obsession on my part lol every petstore no matter how small has been thoroughly searched by me for that reason. the white and green it stunning too.

G'day, does anyone know of a link to read up or explain how betta genes are passed on? As @Wildfire mentioned regarding dominant genes over weaker genes.

If only I could send you my matric bio book. We did this about two weeks ago with human genes.

I'll try and do a quick summary.
First we would have to get a pair of betta's, of which genes we are certain of.
During meisosis, genes are split in sex cells. Lets say a black betta with homozygous genes crosses a white betta with heterogeneous genes.
Lets say black is bb and white is BB. Therefor we have one fish with bb (homo) and another with Bb (Heterogeneous)
We draw a punnet diagram to illustrate what some of the offspring may be.
    examplepunnet.jpg
By crossing the genes like in the example, we can sometimes determine what the characteristics the offspring will have.

    HTH a bit.
If not, google "genetics/co-dominance" or something along those lines. Also note that the offspring can differ due to environmental factors such as temperature etc.

@Hotdog, in Thailand & other countries they use indian almond leaves. Here in good old SA we use half a styrofoam cup. I add Blackwater extract to my spawning tanks or Atisons BettaSpa, depends on what I have in stock. As far as plants go, any floating type will do, this helps to keep the nest together if you don't use the cup method. Plus point to using real floating plants is that it helps with infusoria which the fry eat in the 1st couple of days. As for the nest, the male blows bubbles in a corner or under the cup, these bubbles are covered with siliva from the male, they have a special gland in their mouths that makes these bubbles sticky and the eggs "sticks" to this.

@windfire, yes I still have but they are going fast. Green is very sought after, I myself were looking for them and now I bred my own by pure luck. I will be keeping at least 2 for myself. So if you want some you must make a plan and come get them. I'll keep 2 for you.

    Update on the CT spawn

All the eggs have hatched!!! The Orange CT male is a good dad. Will remove him on Saturday, then I'll take over daddy duties. At last some A Grade Show Quality Crowntails on the way. Can't wait to see how they turn out.

Update on the Blue Fire Dragon HM male X White HM female spawn

The fry are doing great and are growing fast.

Update on the Blue Fire Dragon HM male X Super Red Golden Dragon HM female

The fry are also doing great, it not a very big spawn, counted about 26.

Both these spawns should be interesting to see how they turn out since I don't have the genetic make-up of any of my Betta's. I will keep records from my own breeding as I go along.

Hi @keith64, @Hotdog, @Skye01, @Rooivlerkie, thanks for all your interest, it is much appreciated. I will post lots of pics as soon as the fry are picture worthy, for now they look like any other betta fry. They are still small and does not display colour or finage yet. Please be patient... How do you think I must feel... I'm just as eager as you guys and gals only more so.lol. We all have to wait and see, but I promise you I will post pics in due time.

    Kind Regards

    Charles

PS: The A-Grade Show Quality Crowntail spawn is big, over 80 easy!
