Hi all, firstly I'm a huge fan of your bettas'. The coloring is amazing. I am a newbie on the site and was hoping that someone could possibly direct me to a seller in Cape Town that stocks half moon bettas'? I have a crown tail and veil tail, but I'm so intrigued with the half moons'?

Hi @jkf69, Welcome to TASA and the 'Betta' side of life. Contact @keith1964 and or @Rooivlerkie, there are others as well. They might be able to assist you further down in Cape Town.

Thanks Charles, the beta side seems just that. Thanks for the assistance, I'll post pics of my new boy when I find him.

@Charles , as far as I have figured out , F4 seems to be the best for consistant true line breeding but I could be wrong , still learning as much as I can , either way , it is still fun along the road too perfection and I reckon you have a very good start :)

@col182, you are quite correct about the F4 line, from the research that I have gathered over the past year your comment is in line. The only difference is that I aquired A Grade Show Quality breeding stock which puts me at a great advantage. Still I've got a long way to go in creating my own unique line. If we look at the Mustard Gas line we find today, it's not even remotely close to the original Mustard Gas, forgot who created the first Mustard Gas, after that there was a Lady that called her line also Mustard Gas but there was a dispute about the name since the first owner had Copy Rights on the name, breed etc. We now know her line as Lavender, she had to change her line name. We all know how a Lavender looks like, it's a mixture between pink and white to a slight light purple. So it goes on and on. With line breeding you can in breed up to the 8th generation after which the strain and gene pool will be to weak to carry on. Gene pool needs to be refreshed after at least F4 to F5. One can also cross back to parents and grand parents and great grand parents if they are still alive by then and start a F1 again.

@Charles the parent stock I'm sure counts for a lot , the plans you have for your line sound awesome , so if the grand parents are not still alive, how do you go about refreshing the gene pool , simply add a fish which might have the finnage or color similiar to your line in order to start a new F1 ?

@col182, yes you bring in a new male or female or both from a different breeder to refresh your own line and start fresh again.

Update on Black Orhid HM male X Black HM female.

Succes at last!!!! There is over 100 fry!!!! This proving my female is extremely fertile. The male tends very well to his young, I'm very impressed with this male. I even tried to feed him since it's been 4 days since he last ate anything, he refuses any food and is constantly tending to the fry. I will remove him by the latest on Sunday morning.

    Thanks @Rooivlerkie and @Skye01.

The male is now removed and the fry are free swimming. They are already taking MW & BBS. I'm very excited to see what colours will come from the Black Orchid HM male x Black HM female. Only one fry survived from the previous black HM spawn and he/she looks very dark. Still very small but will post a pic of him/her in about 2 weeks time. If I forget, please remind me.lol.

Nice Charles, you've done well with your spawn! I'll post a pic of my latest bettas' at some stage... A red dragon HM/SD and a light pink/pearl DT.

Now for some interesting pics... These are of the Blue Fire Dragon HM male x Super Red Gold Dragon HM female... as you can see it's a Double tail... not all of them turned out Double tail's. Only have 6 of this spawn left of which only 1 x DT. I culled the rest due to deformities.

    DSC00497.jpgDSC00504.jpg

So this believes me to think that both parents carry the DT gene and all the fry carry's the DT gene (HM DT/dt & ST/dt (HM ST/dt).
