Normal veil tails in 50 cm tanks, using glass lantern chimneys to house the females.
bred quite a few, but the market for normal bettas arn't that good.
Since 1971, I've bred Kribs, Angels, Gourami's, Oscars, Deacons, Corys, various malawi's and Tanganicans, and the normal selfbreaders like Convicts, Jewels and livebearers.
Earlier this year, I managed to even get bumblebee gobies breeding twice!
I appreciate a challenge and always look for the rarer species to breed, but get bored quickly!

    Update on my fry:

They are a nice decent size now (ready to be parted with).

The greatest thing for me thus far is that I've identified at least 3 males amongst the fry and there hasn't been a single fight in that tank yet. I'm not going to split these fish up; instead, I'm going to keep them where they are and let them grow even further and see if I can let several males co-exist in peace 1 tank (I've read on the internet that there are a few people in the world that managed to get this right). So, hold thumbs...there's nothing I can do, except to not remove them from the tank, to prevent them from fighting

I've also noticed a small little bubblenest amongst my floating C.Cornuta earlier in the week when I fed them. A third of my females are ready to spawn already btw :)

    Will post pics later

    Cheers
    Dale

    Howdy guys & gals

Just to update you, I've successfully inline bred with my bettas. Order as follows:

    Original Pair

    Male - Phenotype White DoubleTail
Female - Genotype Opague CrownTail Female

    Their Fry

Male - Genotype Navy Blue DoubleTail (pheno = Veil)
Female - Phenotype Navy Blue DoubleTail

    Their Fry

About 3 / 4 weeks old now. Spawn has yield about 25% phenotype DoubleTails. Have +/- 50 fry which has been transferred today to my fully planted 60l tank. Colours and finnage starting to develop nicely now. So far, bulk of the fry are white in colour. Will let you know once they are ready to be sold if you're interested in breeding bettas (siblings pair).

All my tanks in the fishroom has gone today, so I'm left with only 4 tanks.

I still have my fry from Halfmoon spawn as well, so I'll attempt the same as described above in due time and post an update when I'm ready.

PS - All the fry in red text above has been moved to my fully planted 1.2m community tank today and there are 4 males in this batch and they've been living in peace in the same tank since I bred them. Whoever said that betta males can't live in harmony together hey? :p
The trick is to always keep them together...never split the fry from each other else they'll turn on each other. NB - This isn't always a guarantee...think I just got lucky but I'm trying it with the latest batch of fry as well so see if this method works each time round.
    They occupy the tank with: 1 X Discus, 2 X Ottos, 2 X Denison Barbs, 1 X S.A.E.

If you're interested in buying bettas from batch in red, let me know via e-mail (cos I don't log on to forums much) and we'll chat. All are high quality of course

    Cheers 4 now
    Dale

I would like to attest to the quality of the abovementioned betta's. They are BEAUTIFULL! It was also an eyeopener to see these high quality males swim together. Maybe things could change once the testerone kick in... LOL.
    Good luck, Dale.

breeding bettas -my way by solex69

Thanks for the inspiring article. It has certainly inspired me to try my hand at betta breeding. I followed the article step by step and I am happy to report that the pair have spawned (28/10/09) I removed the female and the male is busy with the nest. I would like to know whether a light is needed to be kept on at night. Would you point me to a retailer of Indian almond leaves- your help would be greatly appreciated.

    Update:

Due to interest of my current betta stock, here's a video taken last night. They are all siblings and happily living in peace.

I've decided to setup my spare breeding tank to breed mother back to son....results will be stunning. Will keep you guys posted on that.

    Cheers

Nope, would like to get someday though.

Honestly, I haven't had much time for the hobby in the last few months. I've downscaled big time on tanks, but going to give my betta breeding another go

    Thanx Dale.
Very nice video - nobody believes me, when I tell them that you keep a school of Bettas like Guppies!
    Keep us posted!

    Hi all

I know I've been very quiet...that's mainly due to church, work, gym and the new g-friend :)

As some of you may know, I've downscaled big-time on the hobby but I am glad to announce that I'll pick up betta breeding within the next few weeks again. Still have the same batch as last time, so the next successful spawn will be more DoubleTails. I think the phenotype yield of the spawn will be much higher after all the strain purification I've done (what a schlep!).

Will post more info once I have it

    Ciao 4 now
    Dale

Thought you left the country. Now all you have to do is buy some of Altums dragons and breed them for us.
