Blacklisted?

Well, I guess the Goldfish/Koi market in amongst the biggest in the Pet industry. I have heard of an invasive carp in the West that usually gets caught in competitions. This fish is then mushed up and processed into fish derivatives to be used in fish food.

Anyone know if Goldfish have evolved in our South African waters?

In approximately 1986/7, I wrote to the TFH magazine about a yellow longfinned Carp they displayed on their frontpage... and being a keen angler (had Springbok colours in fresh water angling) at the time, I speculated around the idea of introducing those (beautiful) Carps to our water systems to elevate the excitement of angling, which was restricted to the ordinary Carp, Barbel and onderbek (basically)..... A new fish to catch... (we did release all the fish we caught after the weigh-in)

Their reply to me was that the fish would gradually revert back to the original Carp colour and fin structure.... (if it survived at all, being yellow and easily visible to the predators).... This made sense to me, so even if we release Kois and goldfish into our environment.... I doubt if they will increase their numbers substantially to have an impact.

 

There are a number of feral koi and goldfish populations around SA. They are reproducing and surviving in the wild

 

AhAhAhAhA......wait let me catch my breath...... I laughed so hard I blew coffee through my noise, thanks Henk chommie you just made my day. I haven't laughed this hard in a very very long time, what was DEAT thinking (Oh wait I just answered my own question there) trying to blacklist a species of fish that brings in millions of foreign currency into this country. Not to mention we have some of the best breeders of Koi in the world, talk about having your priorities all wrong.

Anyway now that the burning sensation in my nose is gone back on topic.

None of the threats posing our local fish species come from aquarium bred fish or plants but from species introduced years back namely carp, black bass, trout and plants like the Water hyacinth. That is if the fish dont die first because of raw sewage and mine water being dumped in you water table while the government turns a blind eye.

Does this mean the various inverts wil be legally available soon? Are they on the new lists?

 

I have read that it was in the pipeline but still had to be approved, but I want to find out if it is still on and if anybody know when.

 

Guys, I heard that the Pleco's are now also blacklisted in SA, is this true?

If this is true our LFS will not be getting Pleco's anymore.

I find the freshwater inverts debate quite ridiculous, it was a blanket ban with no research at all. Luckily we might get some relief someday.

Just as an example, red cherry shrimp, neocardinia heteropoda, is a red genetic morph of wild caught neocardinia. We actually have these shrimp in our local rivers, but they're transparent and have adapted to our very cold water. The ones available in the trade would be Asian ones that live in warm waters 22 degrees and higher.

The latter can't breed in our local waters and the former can't breed in our warm tanks. Let's hope that logic prevails and we get access to some of the most awesome creatures ever introduced to fishkeeping

On another note, I still don't understand why they would destroy species that are endangered in their local habitats. That's COMPLETELY counter-intuitive! Endangered species have been saved by programs where they're bred in captivity rather than wild caught. Admittedly it was the wild catching that caused the problem, but it was turned around. The galaxy rasbora is a case in point.

So why can't we start a breeding program for locally endangered populations of fish? Is it only because we're governed by a bunch of morons who got their jobs via their cousins and friends and don't care about the species they're supposed to be protecting?

And if you're going to delete this post, please have the common courtesy of telling me about it so I don't carry on saying whatever it is that got the post deleted.

As you said it is a very interesting creature.
By the same token i've seen some freshwater crayfish(a Local species) that was caught in some of our dams by some of my angling buddies.
I wonder what research has been done about them,their habitat and breeding behaviours.

 

From what digging I did about 2 years ago, the local shrimp are used quite a bit by universities for all sorts of research. There's even some big ones in KZN that get to about 8cm or larger. Is there any way to get a permit for keeping this sort of thing under the current laws?

I mean if they're able to export from all over the world, why can't we keep local fauna and flora?

 

you need to apply from your local nature conservation body for a permit to keep them. some species you might also need a national one

 

Could it really be that straightforward?
I would love to set up a cold water indigenous shrimp tank at home, and I suppose if that's possible then it would be legal to discuss in the forums...
