I have 2x Fluval FX5 and I'm really happy with them. They filter 3500lt/hr which I think would be ideal for your tank. just my opinion.

@Shakes, I hear what you say. But at this stage I am going to redo my tank completely. Thus I am looking at budget aswell.:sad2: I am sure 2 cannisters will be best. But I can't do that at this stage. I am looking at getting one now and maybe another when I get some "ching" again. :santaclaus:

I think I'll go with the Tetratec EX1200 and keep my two internal filters running with it. This should be sufficient untill I can get another cannister.

- maybe give us some idea what you are planning to stock ... any plants, big meat eaters ? This actually has a big impact on the amount / type of filtration.

I use the Fluval 405. Does about 1300 LPH and works well. Love the fact that you can have different media types in it.

306 for my 240L tank. Must say very impressed (although just be gentle with the plastic clips.).

I am going to have a planted tank. No big meat eaters. Tiger barbs (roughly 80), Corydora's and a Betta. Lighting 6 T5 bulbs.

I have a 500l tank and went through the same exercise over a year ago. After much research and with a crowded tank I decided on the Eheim 2080, It was a decision between it and the Fluval FX5 but after reading many reviews i came to the conclusion that theHeim is much superior (in fact I bought the FX5 and returned it, also the FX5 produces a very strong current that may not be the best for a planted tank)
I run my Eheim 2080 with a Eheim 2217 but I am sure that it will do the job on it own. It is a costly filter but amazing..

Good luck

been doing some reading on the typical issues you can expect on the TETRATEC EX 1200 ..

Tetra Germany - Tetra Equipment Support - Spare parts shop - Tetra EX External Filter (EX 1200) (this link might change) it is to the products manual.

From the manual "you may need to grease the seal ring with a standard lubricant, such as Vaseline." Seems like most people who have the product and experience problems failed to do the initial/continues lube.

at R1200 this does seem like an Ok bang for the buck.

I use a Cascade 1200 for my 310L tank and I am very happy with it. It is quiet and keep up with cleaning the tank. I am getting another one for better filtration with 2 giant oscars and 2 plecos

I bought the Tetratec EX1200 from petstop. Will get it this week.

Another snag though. I discovered my tank is 6mm glass all round. What a waste. Now I have to get one made. I will have it made in 10mm.

So seems I will have to wait another month or so before I start with the Planted.

Who makes a 5 foot tank in 6mm? Even the bottom?

sad but people who keep snakes, spiders and the like ... they need the cage not the strength.

Yeah I would not trust 6mm on 5ft .. well maybe if it was very well braced, but the base eish.

Yeap think petstop has the best prices on the EX1200 .. please post a pic of the tap unit when you get it, seems like most people have an issue with leaks around an old design.

I am also contemplating investing in the ex1200 since the euro rand is poked and I can not afford another JBL.

Will do. I have a friend who uses a EX1200 on his 6 foot tank. No problems whatsoever. Maybe some are just unlucky. Yes Petstop is definitely the cheapest I could find. Saw them at the Expo today. Very helpful. Loved their exhibit at the show. Very interesting tanks displayed.

6mm glass can be used on a 5 foot tank, the only problem is that it can not be very high. The higher the tank, the more pressure at the bottom and middle and the thicker glass is required. I've seen tanks the same size than my tank and they've used 8mm glass but there is a lot of bracing and I used 10mm but I don't require any bracing.

Agree hight is the bugger, in the above calculation, if you push that tank to 60cm (i.e. 495l) then you would be wise to go for 12mm at a factor of 3.5 with no bracing. Assuming we are talking about the tank that is almost 500l that needs the canister and is 150cm in length has the hight to be braceless (another assumption) with 6mm glass we are talking in the region of a 85cm wide tank. he he now these are coming into fashion (low and wide) but at a mere 38cm .. that flow from the EX1200 needs to be directed via two returns or a spray bar.
