Nice looking tank! eager to see how you finish it off.. If you guys like monster tanks and fish, have a look at: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com. Interesting idea for cheap monster tanks are ply wood sides, painted with pond sealant and then one viewing window made of acrylic or glass..

Had the joy of sinking a coupla cold ones in front of this sucker last night.... ZS6 and I came up with a coupla ideas concerning the heating problem a monster tank like this faces.... Not giving it all away as yet but it will involve some solenoid valves and seperate temperature probes for internal and external temperature....Good thing ZS6 is such a genius with electricity....

As for the lot of you who likes the idea of a planted Amazon styled tank - gonna be VERY difficult to achieve as the tank base is not flat - think more of a koi pond with a flush bottom drain.... So all the nice PFP and chemicult will get flushed right into the garden..... Also, how the dinges do you punch enough light to the bottom of a tank that is + - 1,4 meters deep? Bank upon bank of metal halides chews a HUGE hole in ones pocket... So came up with the idea of using natural bamboo in the tank...big pieces of dried bamboo is Pratley Putty'd to some slate bases and "groves" of this submerged in clumps into tank... Java ferns tied to the nodes of the bamboo creates quite a natural look once it takes and starts spreading.... Back and sides aiming for a moss wall....
Later that evening we climbed on the net and showed ZS6 a couple of my fave Tankbusters....think he's sold(Hey big guy? Remember that pic of the huge shoal of Red Devils feeding?)... aka...Watch this space.... Just privelaged to have been asked to help out on this Monster....

Wonderful tank dude, and right up the road from where I stay...

I'm assuming you're already planning a solar system for water heating, so my suggestion is to consider skylights (the tubes with domes on top) for lighting. You'll have to find a way to control the amount of light entering the tank, but if you're aventurous I've had the idea of using an iris door on a skylight for about a year now, shouldn't be too difficult to DIY ;)

Also, what is the current temperature in the tank, and what are you expecting the lows and highs to be? Because there's plenty of tropical fish that would happily live at 15 to 20 degrees.

Like this idea of he skylights, but don't think it would be practical as the tank is under a thatched roof and I also have a lot of trees. The whole roof is in the shade. the solar system will be installed on the roof next door which is in the sun.
