There are tons of ads on Gumtree for shrimp.. Why aren't these guys axed by the nature conservation then?

Caridina nilotica are the indigenous species here. :)

Because nature conservation isn't exactly doing their job.

The misinformation comes from our lazy goverment not updating the lists. Crays are blanket banned. My source is also the prof. He works very closely with nature conservation.

So does anyone have an actual 'blacklist' they can post?

Now i am confused, Ruben gets bashed for mentioning NEMBA, but then the NEMBA list is posted?

Is there a 'blacklist' or is the 'blacklist' just the Prohibited list on NEMBA. Prohibited and invasive are two different things.
Also that list clearly states you cant get permits for crayfish, but a few people on this thread have said you can keep them with permits.

Not trying to cause arguments, nor step on toes, but there seem to be alot of rumours and conflicting info being circulated, so having all the facts/lists available will benefit all.

Here's the other list I have dug up.

A few permits have been issued for commercial use in the past.

If everything was available online it'd be helpful, but from what Prof Dirk has told me crayfish have been blanket banned out of risk to our mud walled dams. This is still in effect and the ones on NEMBA are the species proven to be invasive. That's what I gather

The only blacklist (prohibited species list) available to us is the link I have on the stickies thread at the top of the blacklist forum.
I have checked and there is still no update to it after the 2016 one so for now, its what we have

Unfortunately the blacklist discussion always end up in arguments due to the lack of any further documented proof on further details from what is on the blacklist

All we can do is follow that list and your conscience on what is not in black and white on the list
Heated arguments end up as nothing more than heated arguments as, like I said, there is no other documented proof we can use
Always think of the consequences that what you do and support can have and if you find you did something silly, make sure you resolve the problem the right way

@Hendre, the list you typed up on Monster fish keepers which is the link you have posted, is the 2010 list which is long outdated

The latest list is the 2016 link I posted on the blacklist forum

The rate at which things are escalating now in this country I think the legality on freshwater crays are the least of our worries, so I'm done with this subject. The list hasn't been updated in 2 years. That tells me all I need to know as to where the problem is.

Hmm with all the farmers not "farming" at the moment we may have to import crays just for food:(

Once again quoting old sources. Are the commercial farms still active?

But still more than happy to take the time to mock Ruben?

List for amendments was published in February 2018, which has a lot more fish added but still very little on shrimp/crayfish. Whats worrying is that if something makes the NEMBA list, it means its already naturalized in SA. Just concerned that lists and Laws/Acts are misquoted and people dont really know what/who to believe.

So the safe option is not to get any crayfish if you are unsure whether they are illegal or not. Ignorance is not a excuse.

Ok guys let’s just leave this, I’m sorry I started this, I feel that if you personally can care for the fish then there is nothing wrong with keeping it, I have my 3 crays, if they breed so what I need feeders so there problem solved
