I've got that book and it's by far the best of all my books! I think that I paid around R220 for it a while back.

Nice book, I've got it. Marines and Freshwater. Well illustrated, good species coverage. The descriptions are possibly a bit short, but it has a nice section on a good variety of plants and useful section on disease, where they are categorized by the symptoms, so is helpful in diagnosis. Good book, and that's an INSANE price.

I've got that one, as well as the Complete Encyclopedia of Tropical Fish by Ester Verhoef-Verhallen. Translated from German I think. A bit archaic, but very informative, with about half a page of small texted writing per fish. I've also got 2 others, but I can't find them I like my books...

Or maybe the descriptions are just short compared to my other one...

I have the 'Complete Encyclopedia of tropical fish' by Mary someone and Gina bailey (i think)

And the 'Complete Illustrated Encycolpedia of tropical freshwater and Saltwater Fish' by Gina Bailey

They are both good for quick info, but not the most comprehensive and don't always have the info you want!

Other than that, I have the Mergus/Baensch Tropical atlas. Vol. 2,3,4 and Photo Index 1-5. I also have the Mergus Catfish Atlas Vol. 1.

They are much more indepth, but can be hard to follow or find fishees in!!

Then I have a few small random ones which I can't think of right now!!

I also have the Hiscox Plant book, which is good for starting in plants!! Although it was designed for the UK market, so it has some Blacklisted species in there!!

    Cheers
    G!

Oh, and I would have loved a copy of that book for that price Dolph!! If ever you order more, keep me in mind!!

    Cheers
    G!

I have "Aquarium Fish" by Mary Bailey and Gina Sandford. I actually bought it before I even got my first tank. Without it I probably would have made every mistake possible. Was a great help. I still refer to it now and then. Paid R 184.00 from Exclusive

brilliant book on identifying all the apistos! +/- R380

well actually the purpose of the aqualog books is to provide a reference for all the species commercially available to the trade. they came with the labelling system for lfs as well and have all species on cd...

I seriously need to get myself a proper aquarium book. This thread is really useful for picking such a book!

Currently I used the internet for all my info and one never knows who's right.

    Hey Dolph!!

So does it cover different variants of each species as well, for instance, Agassizii 'Double Red' as well as 'Alenquer' and 'Tefe Red back'??

I can get it for cheap some where at the moment (+/-R200 - Only one copy though!!)!!

    Cheers
    G!

It does not cover variants of each species... looking through the index, the only variants it has is A sp. Paraguay I, II and II as well as A Trifasciata Trifasciata and A Trifasciata Maciliensis.

Problem with this book is that its printed in 1997 and I dont believe there's an update for it. This is quite a challenge as many species available now most likely were not available then and are therefore not covered. On the flip side, reference and photos to many species covered in this book cannot be found in other books or the internet.

So I would still say its a good book but by no means is it a complete catalogue of all apistogrammas...

edit...I've just paged through (pages are stuck together from water damage!!!) and found that there are a few photos of agassiz variants as well as bitaeniata and a few others...

on the subject of apists, have you ever seen:

    A Leulingi

    A Jaruensis

    A Mendezi

    A Paucisquamis

    and what about Biotoecus Opercularis...
