Anyone use purigen

That's also been on my mind all weekend? I put in plant fertz on Friday, and it dawned on my that the Purigen might have taken it out by sat. (?)

 

I am sure the manufacturers will be able to answer that question. I will e-mail them and ask them.

 

Just put filter wool in my filter (for the first time - up until now, we have been on carbon & sponge only) and WOW, the water is looking beautiful. (kinda wish I could dive in there myself)

Let's see what the manufacturers say about Purigen and the fert and Co2... Also wondering if it will take out stuff like Heal-all and stresscoat...?

 

The Seachem site states that it has minimal effect on fertilizers. In mind mind that means it does absorb some of it, but possibly not all of it. The questions is, does it absorb all the diferent components in equal parts? Or will it affect the balance/concentration of the different fertilizer elements?

Seachem also advise you to remove it when medicating the tank.

I would take out Purigen as Carbon when medicating Madam. When you finished medicating... (follow instructions on med. bottle- Some medications need to be added every day for a week, some once a day, some twice a day)... then put the purigen or carbon back in to take the meds out the water.

As far as I've read, purigen doesn't effect all medication, so I would advise putting the carbon into your filter for a few days after medication to take meds out, then remove the carbon again.

on medication and its effect on purigen:

"Certain slime coat products/conditioners(those that are amine-based polymers) will render Purigen non-regenerable. What these polymers will do is bind to the Purigen; when attempting to regenerate the resin, they will then bind with chlorine in the bleach to form chloramine, which can be released into the aquarium. This is not just an issue with Purigen but with all resins being sold in the pet trade. The problem only occurs when one attempts to regenerate the resin, there is no problem unless you wish to regenerate the resin you are using. Seachem products do not contain amine- based polymers and are therefore safe to be used in conjunction with not only our resins, but also with other companies' resins."

on how much purigen to put in a filter for 190l tank, the guy wanted to know if purigen should fill the whole filter for better effect

Thanks for the post! Purigen should be placed in the filter where it will receive maximum water flow through the media. I would recommend placing two bags in your filter so that water is coming into contact with more of the Purigen, allowing for it to be much more efficient at removing organic wastes. another interesting post i found and thought i'd share

"Well I'm putting this on here to help people avoid my HUGE mistake. I was doing a 5 gallon water change on my BC29 yesterday and decided to recharge the Purigen bag by soaking in bleach, I did not let the Purigen sit in the Prime long enough for all the chlorine bleach to be neutralized before returning the Purigen back to the tank. As soon as I placed the Purigen bag by the pump and turned it on, it had immediate effects on the tank and I lost all of my fish (orange spot goby, 6-line, firefish) except my saddleback in a matter of seconds.

I didn't even smell it which I normally do. I only left the Purigen with Prime to de-chlorinate for 4 hours verses the 8-9 hours that it should be. I shouldn't have been in such a rush to return it to the tank. Lesson learned!"

 

I Use purigen in my tank and it works like a bomb, my water is so crystal clear and fresh. It's the best investment i ever made so far on my tank.
