OK... put Purigen in my tank about 3 hours ago.... and YES... I can definately see a big difference in the clarity of the water!

 

Hi Guys and Gals - there may be a side benefit to Purigen for those who keep discus, wild angels and other skittish fish.
The "Panic Syndrome" sometimes encountered in these fish, which quickly becomes contagious to the other fishes in the tank, has been shown (anecdotal evidence only) to subdue the Panic and stop it spreading.

 

Where did you put the Purigen, and how much?

 

In the filter....can't remember exactly how much, I'd have to check it up for you

 

I just put it in my filter. 100g is rated to clean 400litres of water. I'm hoping there is no overdosing caution (didn't find any) because I put the entire 100g into my 160l tank's filter.

 

from what i have read its basicly AC on steroids but better so i dont think u can overdose

 

Reafer, you may not be able to overdose in quantity, but you can deffinately overdose in duration. If you leave it in your tank for too long, it starts killing the good bacteria in your tank. You must only use it till the water is clear and then you have to remove it.

 

Noooooooo... don't tell me that. I wanted to leave it in permanently.

 

Mine stays in permanently with no side effects.

 

Anybody else?? I am also thinking of buying Purigen, but I also want to make sure I can keep it in permanently, to replace my charcoal...

 

My theory is that the Purigen does not actually kill the good bacteria. But since it removes all their food, they will die as a result. Leaving the Purigen in permanently is probably not an issue, as it will continue to remove ammonia, etc. that the now dead bacteria was meant to remove. Of course, you need to keep regenerating the Purigen or replace it once it reached end of life.

 

I regenerate mine every 4 weeks.

 

So in effect what you're doing is removing the natural cycle and replacing it with PURIGEN??? (you totally kill the food of the good bacteria) That then becomes a synthetic tank?? And then you can never leave your tank without the Purigen, ever, ever again unless you start from scratch..

 

i believe there is a new supply of Purigen coming into SA in 6 to 8 weeks time (along with Florite). Panorama will drop their price even more....

Yeah that sounds just about right. I don't have purigen myself, I use natural resources. It's cheaper! But I admit I might want to try it out for a 3-day period to see if it will make the water clearer. But that's an expensive experiment...

 

OK... So it's been in for 3 days now. I've taken it out to see how long the water will stay clear. But I am very happy with the result none-the-less.

Didn't realise it was recommended to take it out once it's cleared the water. Nothing on the packaging said that. Just said to put it in the filter where lot's of water passes over it, and then replenish it with bleech when it changes colour.

 

I don't remove mine for about 6 months. Then I replace it. Bought a big bottle for R300 from hillfox.

 

So now i need to ask... will Purigen remove plant fertz and liquid carbon that you add to a tank?
