this problem is like a vicious circle.. you go tot lfs, you see new fish, you wnat new fish, after a while you realise your tank is getting too full.. so you buy another tank, equipment, more food... then you go to the lfs.. see a new fish you like...

Fish are cheap compared to my son's hobby - horse riding. Last month we had a vet bill of R4500. But we love the horses too and get a lot of enjoyment from them. It's all worth it in the end.

I just can't believe how addictive the fish can be, though :amazed:

 

I feel a lot better now. I thought i was the only one obsessed with my fish, i am a local at my lfs they even call me when new stock arrive......

 

MTS is a given - you have accumulated various tanks, filter , heaters etc. Now a few years later the then affordable HOBs, pumps and heaters start to be a bit of an issue. You decide to cut back on tank count due to electricity cost for heating and lights, still you have a double digit tank count - so take the initial setup cost of an average tank and be prepared to spend that same amount in 18 - 24 months per tank. We all probably have the draw, box full of what was supposed to be a good deal, but ended up as just another peace of over marketed or cheap kit (LFS recommendations seem to be the biggest dust collectors), but we know better now.

I am now in my second refresh cycle but this time I am only putting kit in that has a 3-4 year manufactures warranty and it probably means the German stuff. Yes for most the warranty is not honored in ZA as well as they are in other countries still - seems like a way better quality so should last longer.


As in most things in life - buy the best quality that you can afford - rather have fewer items of better quality.

When they start keeping the new stock in the back, with the "prefect tank" sitting next to it and call you to come "see something really kewl"... then you know your hobby is becoming a bit of an obsession.
