To be honest I am still not sure..

I'm thinking about Apistos, ive never kept them before.. alternatively maybe rams if I can fi good ones..

I love African Butterfly Fish, so I might have to go with him and the Apistos.

Will let you know when I get something but all ideas are welcome !

I see moolis is getting a shipment in of apistos so. That's worth checking out @GregM. Butterfly fish are really stunning fish although they do get pretty big so I don't know if rams will be safe maybe some of the other guys. Will know better about that

@tanked72, fair point. I have kept butterflies before and they didn't get too big and they didn't interfere with their tank mates. But the tank should be big enough for everyone to have their space. Maybe Killifish and the butterfly, keep the African theme...

I have emailed the store on info from moolis and await their response.

Likewise, im sure I will get a long scientific explanation as to how im incorrect but it seems to me that the general parameters for the majority of Amazonian biotopes are quite similar to those of the forested regions of Western and Eastern Africa so the plants, water parameters etc should be ok.

If I can source the fish locally then I think that's maybe how ill go..

    Thanks for the input

Yes they are very much the same biotype atleast you can have a lot of anubias. Plants they are from west africa and there are a few different types plus they are hardy and no fish will eat them lol they are not known as plastic plants for. Nothing @GregM

Now that is stunning!(pic in last thread),that tank is full of wood! I like you'r tank and the idea of the African biotope, butterfly fish are one of my favorites and in that big tank you could keep quite a few. Nice job on the cleanup, and as for the tannins.....patience is the only remedy...and water changes.

    Keep up with

Oh remember to put a lid on the tank to keep those butterflys from jumping out

@GaryG @tanked72 thanks again for the input and @GaryG thanks for the kind words.

I've kept butterflies before and one actually got out the feeding hole in the lid.. was devastated.

its decided then, West African biotope it shall be !

DIY substrate seems to be doing well, below is a differential of 9 days growth. Second big water change this weekend, looking forward to some clearer water..
