Not to throw a spanner in the works but some of those fish species are not compatible - the jewels with the guppies for example. I think the fish species will need to be decided on before hand to ensure all the fish get along.

It has got nothing to do with no Christmas spirit ;) , my situation is not allowing me to do it. Johan understands and that is all that matters..... otherwise would have helped out :)

Ammar, the tank will be cycled by Sunday, I will go and test the water tomorrow evening or Saturday morning just to make sure it is ok. I delivered the tank last Saturday and they filled it Sunday so it would have been circulating since Sunday. I specifically did not wash the ceramic rings in the three filter boxes in order to keep the bacteria around for re-use. These little buggers must do their part as well.

But I will never ask anyone to drive from Germiston just to deliver a couple of fish, really, I can pick up either this Saturday or next Saturday when I visit Panorama again. If you insist I will have to feed you copious amounts of beer and other stuff to keep you alive and well as well..........

I just googled Jewel fish quickly and see there are two main types, African Jewelfish and Jewel Cichlid.

The African Jewel will eat its own young and is omnivorous.
The Jewel Cichlid becomes very good parents and look after the eggs and young together. Ok, just read further and saw they are also very territorial and aggressive in a communal tank.......

So, not so totally different in behavior.

Ammar, which jewels do you have?

You don't need to justify to anyone, you're doing a great thing.

'Losie' is a box, usually corporate or VIP

I would suggest only going with the live-bearers. Guppies in particular are hardy and watching them give birth is fascinating

@Oldtimer they are african Jewels, they look amazing, but wont go with the fish Barry is giving you. they are very hardy fish, not much maintenance required but as @Marcel_73 mentioned, I think he will enjoy the live bearers much more.

I will speak to Barry and see what plan we can make to get them to you, im heading that way on friday evening

sorry i missed a few posts.. @TheGrissom 100% those Jewels don't mess around, I threw in a dead guppy the other day and he/she didn't even chew on it.

@Oldtimer I will do it with pleasure, and will take you up on the beer offering but it will have to be another time. I have taken advantage of this as well to deliver some blue dreams to my pretoria buyers so It will be hectik.i have 4 different places to deliver to.

Ok Guys, the outcome of this exercise went as follows..............
Hannes collected the light fitting and gave me two plants for it...........
Barry caught a bunch of fish, bagged them along with a bunch of plants and moss and Ammar collected them from Barry on Friday morning.
On Friday evening around 21H30 - 22H00 he stopped off at my house with the fish all alive and well.
The youngster and his mom had business on Saturday morning so I could only deliver to him after 16H00 on Saturday.
Deciding that I cannot keep the fish in the bag the whole time I introduced them to my tank for the night and on Saturday afternoon I did my best to catch as many as possible. I deliberately did not catch all as I first wanted to see the condition of his tank and make sure the fish will survive a couple of days. If all goes well I will take the rest of the fish later this week. I also installed his 200W heater and his mom bought him an electronic thermometer which I set up for him.
I planted the plants and explained the feeding and different feed types to them and tested the PH of the water which was on the high alkaline side but dosed that and got the PH down to as close to 7.0 as I could.

Thanks to all who contributed and I think he is now the happiest young man in Gauteng.

Awesome @Oldtimer! I have plenty of plastic plants if the young man needs any as well as some shrimps if he wants. Well done again, and thanks for doing a follow up post, always nice to see how things turn out :)

Huge pleasure Johann, it was great meeting you as well, and look forward to helping you out with the new tank once you decide on it.
seeing this kid smiling just makes it all worth it.
I have to make this comment tho, because I know Johann Will not say anything.
@hviviers75 , AKA Hannes.. you are the owner of some of the best looking tanks on the forum (plant wise) winner of last months tank of the month.. yet you find it good enough to trade 2 X 4foot light fittings (worth over R150) for a single plant, not even sure what that plant is... I can understand if you were looking for a quick deal here and there, we all do it, In fact I scored 2 huge bags full of plants from @f-fish when i started my tank and he wouldn't take a cent for it.
@Oldtimer used what he had to try and get as much as possible for this little kid that really needed it, I was just expecting a bit more from you... that's all i'm trying to say.

    @Oldtimer ... absolutely awesome......

Sorry I missed out on a lot of this, between load shedding and Wi-Fi being off due to lightning hit on Thursday I have been battling to log on

We have also got a number of small plastic plants and a good few pieces of wood we can donate that would fit that tank
Let me know if you need and you can always meet up with Cesar in Edenvale as he works that side of the world

Ok guys, I walked into that one with my eyes wide open. I have, hopefully, now paid my school fees on this forum. I have met with similar situations on 4x4 Community Forum and on Avcom as well. I hope he enjoys every minute of use gets from his light.

To Maria, I have had offers of live plants from various people, I will be able to buy another tank and make two planted tanks as well as plant young Ayden's tank so full you will not see any fish. Thanks for the offer but I think we are going to be ok now.

Ammar got me a very reasonable quote on a purpose made tank size 1200 x 500 wide x 800 deep which will replace the standard 4ft I now have. I will confirm the order hopefully before we leave on holiday otherwise early January. He also generously offered to assist me with propely setting up a planted tank.

I will start a new thread for that tank.

For now, thanks for all the contributions for Ayden's tank. I will be giving him the last of his fish and all of my Mollies and Guppies and smaller fish except my Tetra Neons as well. He will now be ok with his tank. I amm hoping to get some Angels from Barry on the 8th and want to have more exquisite species rather than the species every 2nd person has. Also, I want slightly bigger fish as my tank now looks very busy but one nearly cannot distinguish which species which fish is. By bigger I mean in the region of 5 to 10cm.

    Again, thanks to all

eish - get the scuba gear out ... consider dropping it to 600 MAX unless you 6ft8 tall build like a long distance athlete and as flexible as a 16 year old yoga instructor, esp if you going planted.
