All the reading I did basically says a tank has to be on polystyrene or you risk the chance of the stress breaking the tank. Is that maybe what happened here?

It was not fun at all. I still to this day find bits of glass hidden in corners. I have not contacted any one just as yet to get new glass, but hopefully will do in the next few weeks and the tank will be up and running again. I am just trying to work out the best and low maintenance filter system and a good, cheap lighting system too. I am currently running a DIY canister filter that always leaks for some reason. so thinking if i should install it in the hood ( would this put to much pressure on the glass, as the hood is already heavy)
    Thanks for the support guys

Sadly i have decided NOT to rebuild this tank. It is a little to big to keep in my little flat.
SO if any one is interested there is a stand and a half tank that could be bought. Its a cheap project to get a 2m tank. I have got a quote of between R 1000 to R 1500 to fix the tank. willing to sell the tank for R 750 as is with stand and canopy. so you will be getting a 2m tank for under R 2500.
    PM if your interested.
