@boebie I have to save up for all the things that's needed for the wedding and there after! @Zoom I hope that my fiance would be as understanding once we're married.@azurekoi I have found a source for the bamboo all that's needed now is a lot of vallis lol! Do fish nip at the vallis or not really?

shame dude, i know the feeling, i want to take the leap next year, so that’s why i started my new tank ASAP, hehe

as for the tank, just remember the following, and I can speak out of my own experience.

When setting up my tank, I had small budget, really small!, and you won’t believe how all the small things start to add up!

Fish are nice to have, but you need to feed them, my fiancé thinks is moer funny to see me feed the fish, I have 4 different foods, for all the different types of fish, and they only last a month or so

    Cory’s R85 a month
    Pleco’s R75 a month
    Flakes R30 a month (guessing)
And then all the added “treats” bloodworm and the BS.

So just start off slow, and grow the tank over a few months!

As for the layout of the tank, going “cheap” is not always going to turn out looking “cheap”.

My setup cost me just under R2,000.00

It is so funny reading how we all deal with this - you can imagine all the frozen, live and dry foods we all buy! Not to mention electricity, water, anti-chlorine for all the water changes.

I work by the "don't ask, don't tell" rule...

I'm kind of hanging in the middle of the bamboo and vallis idea or a planted idea. But I think the bamboo and vallis would turn out to be cheaper and as a result of my limited budget it seems to be the way to go.

Haha if only I can get her to love the hobby as much as I do! Sometimes I wonder what would the total be if you were to calculate all the money we've spend on the hobby over the years? I would imagine that some of you guys who have been in the hobby for 10 plus years would get a heart attack if you do the calculation.

Maybe try take her with you to the lfs and see what fish get her attention. I'm just thinking, if you buy a fish for her, perhaps she'll at least take some interest in it...

GG13 - this works well, when they start naming fish or can name fish species, then it becomes a lot easier...

Unfortunately it does also mean you cannot 'sneak' anyone new into the tank! This trick only works once in a while.

@Yster I have only been back in the hobby for 2 years and already it could pay for a decent trip to Kenya or Thailand.

    Hi Yster

Did you consider Green Spotted Puffers - easy setup - just a easy brackish setup.

To fill it up with rummy noses and cardinals ill have to go the planted route to make it worth something.

Wow!!! That tanks look amazing! But its not necessary for the front glass to be cut down in half? I guess it would just make the visibility better? But don't you think the narrowness of the tank would make it difficult to something like that?

30cm wide would make it REAL tricky to get any depth of perspective across a 2m span....
