@shihr Well I'm talking about the Chinese Algae eater, the one you'll find branded as "Algae Eater" in most petshops.
The Siamese Algae Eater that you're talking about only reaches 6" and shouldn't be too aggressive, but it'll most likely be branded as a "Flying Fox"

no i had a chinese algae eater in the past and it only reached 13-14 cm max in 4 yrs.. i just checked online though and it says that it reaches max 10-12inches but is usually smaller tank bred..

maybe my old tank was too small for it..

That's surprising. Most places I've read about the CAE say that it becomes quite large and aggressive as it gets older, and stops eating algae.

+1 on the becomes agressive and stops eating algae part.. mine did that but only grew to that size.. maybe its a tank bred hybrid?

    Hi all,
just an update on my tank, added some rock and driftwood....
Also decided it was time for some more fish so I've now got,

    10 red eye tetra's
    8 or 9 Neons
    3 Blue rams
    1 balloon ram
    2 Julii corys
1 algae eater, last time I saw him was when I put him in the tank...Never again.

Water clarity is still excellent, continuing with my weekly 20% water changes and everything seems to be going very well, I'm pretty chuffed with it all.

    Looking good.

Interesting rock - is it inert.

Should be a nice busy tank with all those fish.

Ya it's sandstone that I soaked and then blasted with my High pressure machine, I put the nozzle on a jet setting and removed any loose particles. I like it cause it breaks the blackness of the tank up a bit...ie; black gravel and background.

It is pretty busy, maybe too busy but I'll see how things go in time....

I do not think it is that busy! Looks good. Can you explain more on the sand stone? What is it exactly, maybe a pic in raw form, and detail on your high pressure machine, air or water?

    Hi Tom,
I will pm you and let you know more about the rock, but I cleaned it with a water high pressure machine after soaking it for 24hrs or so and it came out extremely nice.

I've attached a couple of pics of better quality for you guys.

    Cheers
    Rob

No probs, shot Drew... Stoked at the way things are coming together now.
I reckon in about 6 months time it'll be time for another build, either a beeg cichlid setup or marine.

Sweet, looking forward to building the tank! Also keen on converting my setup to a Malawi display... but still rather undecided! Quintin gave me his other complete 2ft setup so might turn that into the community tank, or maybe some chocolate Gourami's...

Just by the way, I am very unhappy....That rock pushed my PH up to 8.2 and killed all my rams..... :(
So now I am either going to change to malawi's or take that rock out and try Rams again...I donno???
