Let's not get political here. Alcohol abuse is huge in SA, so it seems important enough to drop the huge income on sin tax to keep hospitals open

Cigarettes weaken the lungs, meaning a person who smokes and gets COVID19 is more likely to get severe symptoms than a person who doesn't. Lots of people and companies are challenging that decision here in SA, as lungs don't repair themselves in a month, and blackmarket cigarettes are easily available.

Ahhh ok. More than 85% of the patients at the ICU overhere appeared to have a very high BMI. That in mind (fast)food should have been forbidden.

BTW: I am not a smoker but indeed I don't understand the need to forbid it

I agree with the fast foods.. Most people who are susceptible to the virus are diabetic, or have high cholesterol and many other diet related diseases

We had a pool at work for when the lock down would end. Everyone who took part picked a date. The last date is 15 July. I think whoever chose that date is going to win the pool. No money though - just for the fun of it.

The other part of the story is the socializing aspect that goes with alcohol consumption. People are gathering to party it up, which isn't helping the situation. Once people are drunk enough, inhibitions go out the window, which means that health measures usually in place - like social distancing, wearing a mask, and good hygiene - go out the window.

The cigarettes are yet to get a convincing argument though. From the minister's side, they say that people share cigarettes and therefore there's an increased risk of spread.

The government cant win here - if they do what they are doing they are draconian. If they do nothing people will say the government failed to protect them. What actually needs to happen is people need to take responsibility for their own actions and make informed decisions. Unfortunately this will not be the case in SA.

Bottom line is our government reacted too late, the lock down wasn't used to full effect and we just don't have a plan to get through this. However it isn't just the government who failed us, people didn't take this seriously initially. There were Covid parties, people went on holiday travels when the schools were shut down, lock down regulations were ignored, people traveled overseas with aplomb. Now we are reaping what was sown - and the sad part is people who obeyed everything and are taking every precaution are at the same risk as those who chose to do what they pleased.

If I was in charge I would have only allowed Joburg international airport to be open, rest of the country to carry on as normal, just no international travel. I would have done this when Covid spread to Europe, so it would have been in effect in January already. Anyone coming into SA would get a 3 week quarantine in Joburg. This way our economy wouldn't be at deaths door and we would have been able to control Covid effectively rather than trying to contain it once it was already in SA. Difference between pro-active and reactive really.

I think every government is in a no win situation. damned if you do. And damned if you don’t.

We are in the same situation here. Lock down harder and destroy the economy. Or ease lockdown to get that side of things moving, but COVID cases will go up.

It’s a no win situation. For every single country.

In the UK we are being faced with the same terrible choices.

    Good luck :)

Yes from midnight tonight things will go to level 2. The economy has to be revived now. I fully expect the numbers to climb regarding Covid over the next few weeks as people tend towards pre-lock down activities.

I think that with SA heading into summer, the numbers may actually fall.
According to the so called experts here, one of the reasons our cases have fallen substantially is because in summer, people tend to spend more time outdoors, where the virus particles are less likely to spread - the wind, sun uv etc.

    We are heading into winter...............:(

The PE hospitals are doing okay. I have a family member who is a Dr and she says that wards that were full a month ago are now down to about 25 % capacity.
