@oscar freak rather use black vinyl instead of paint, much easier to remove than the paint.
I use the seachem matrix and it is worth getting.
The owner at my local fish shop said that one could use vinegar to test it. You can also use sera ph minus I think. Not shure on the ph minus

It is the same thing, you can plant it or let it float! I used a stone with a hole in it to keep mine grounded.
