That's a very good price for that size tank including everything. Meaning hood, lights, cupboard etc. Just make sure about the glass thickness...
Algae eaters don't live on Algae alone anyway. You can feed them bottom feeding pellets or baby marrow etc. So don't worry too much over the algae...

Have you considered fiberglass resin? Think this will be better option than varnish.
Here's what I would suggest. Get one of those Styrofoam boxes the fish are supplied in to the pet shops. The pet shop should have one for you....
