yep you often see that growing on new wood if there are still nutrients, once this is gone the bacteria will disappear.

ya if you have a big enough tank just dunk the entire thing into the tank, let all the air out then put your thumb over the small end of the pipe...

I'm no expert but I think I read somewhere that getting a tiny bit of water in the solenoid can cause it not to close.
have you ever seen a planted pico? that is a tank with a water volume of less than 1L I still want to try my hand at that some time :D

that's a pre filer not a canister filter bud, canisters are outside the tank but that's irrelevant a prefilled will work great.
