Is the water free falling into the sump or does the plumping drop the water into the sump but under the sumps water line... I suspect a u bend in...

Are you overfeeding ... snail population can explode when your fish to do clean-up. - Snail traps will work - or filter wool that has fish food...

Until you know where the feet will be standing, it is hard to say what is the best way to deal with the leveling issue - you can easily work over...
