if you are not sure about what condition they are in, those smaller water changes for a few days can only be a benefit..

i would strongly recommend that you do at least 20% weekly as malawis are fish that produce a lot of waste. doing 20% monthly simply does not...

i do 2X weekly water changes on my tanks, 10% - 15% per water change- i dont like doing singly big water changes, for me, doing the smaller water...
