to my knowledge you dont get much for them at lfs, it might be better to try to sell them on the forum, or gumtree or something like that..

i dont know about fire mouths, but i believe that the current setup is probably too aggressive for dwarf cichlids, it all depends on what you want...
i've never boiled sand so i wouldnt be able to tell you, but whatever substrate you do go for, i would suggest a finers subtrate like pfs, rather...

lol, no, i'm not saying it would soften the water (the wood probably will do that) but the sand on its own, will not buffer the water as is...
lol it can be very challenging to get the time management sorted hehe, the last thing you want to do is upset the better half ;)
