There is to many do`s and dont`s in the law of geting a permit, not so easy. Once we get the asesement done, then it will be as leagle as importing a neon tetra. @DewaldC we know about the order, and invoices was checked before releasing. Even though, it remains a grey area, but hopefulle not for long.

My understanding of the law is that if it's no longer on the list/specifically mentioned, it's legal to import, unless there are any clause I.e Permits or whatever. The fact that BLA imported a large quantity of shrimp indicates that they are legal for the moment

Or until some law maker wakes up and sees that they made a mistake, and that all the fry in the rivers are eaten by exotic shrimp...

Looks like no permit required to import shrimp. Think this is excellent news.

Pricing will be R30 a shrimp but the pricing isn't the issue the quantities per bag is the issue and mimum order from the farm is at least 8 bags = 1 box

No no no no no... You guys have it all wrong. Seriously. They do not appear on any blacklist, or banned list, this is true. BUT, and here's the kicker... A risk assessment needs to be done on them, before the government will allow us to LEGALLY import shrimp. While now they are legal to keep, if you already have them, they most certainly are not legal to import. The imports that are currently coming in are not legal imports. Please just be very wary of what you guys are posting on the forums about imports and such. While I know it's not the individual stores doing the imports, they just order off a list, this is a fact. Please just know that if the importer is caught, the shrimp will be confiscated at customs and probably destroyed.

Sean J if I have a supplier that can supply me these within the borders of SA and are locally bred will this be considered legal if I purchase from them

Yes. But it's still a grey area since a risk assessment has not been done. But because they do not appear on a blacklist, technically, it is legal.

So the solution is do the risk assessments on the species and confirm which we can keep an which not.... Now to find someone to do it....

@BugMan correct, so an assesement needs to be done on the species before they will be completely leagel. So they are not leagel to import, and I suggest we keep the shrimp topic to a low, untill we can get a clear indication that we are allowed to import and keep them. To those that have shrimp, please ensure that they are not released into the wild. Rather destroy them before giving them away to some random person.

Department of agriculture normally does the assessments, but can be done by a qualified person with the right degree. The alternative option is to try and get an assessment that has all ready been done by someone from another country.
