Thanks @Marco for your great work in bringing awesome fish to our shores.
Are the sizes in cm? What would your recommendation be on a cost effective purchase, shipped to East London? By this I mean, which size of fish do you think would travel best given the extra day that will be spent in shipping? Or would you advise against it altogether?

 

Hi Broder,

There is no reason to worry about any considerations if you are from outside of Gauteng
I land and keep all out of town fish for a few days and the rebag and ship them them to your nearest airport.
There was a chap in East London that took 10 Discus on the previous shipment and no issues. All landed safely a week later and they are all still doing very well.

As to size - All the sizes are in cm yes. We found that all the sizes ordered travel equally well and I can honestly not say that any size was more or less problematic.
The larger sizes took a bit longer to get upright in the landing tanks but all of the were eating very well 24hrs later and showed no sign of problems

Obviously some strains are more problematic than others and that is maybe more of a consideration factor.

Any strain containing Golden genetics (platinum), the refined Red pigeon based and of course leopard strains are more problematic than the older more established strains (cobalt, turquoise based etc)

Tbere really is no need to be concerned with any of the usual Discus-issues. These Discus are in top health when they land and are fairly easy to keep.
Some strains are unfortunately quite expensive but thats the nature of the game. The harder they are to breed, the more in demand they are and that pushes prices sky high. The Albinos are probably the most popular worldwide at the moment and their prices are very high as a result

Great info there.. Many thanks for that. I'm going to start googling and putting my list together. Guess this is an ideal opportunity to get a group of fish together in one go... Something that would be impossible here in EL... Especially given the choices! The prices are pretty much on par with what we're seeing at the pet shops here... Doubt that you could even compare the quality though.

 

some good looking fish there,do they only do discus and L cats?

@Broder - its a pleasure buddy.
We actually compared these gish to some fish available at the time and found that the cheaper strains were abt 1/2 the price they are usually found at, and quality and health is not even comparable. Its honestly the best Discus available on a large scale in SA and I will argue that until someone can actually prove me wrong.

@oscar freak - they also breed Altum Angels, expensive Arowana and lots of Freshwater rays
@Reedfish - yes for sure its a nice list. Only way to improve on this list is to add some Wild types. But that will probably never happen

Am sure Cesar would be tempted. We spoke about it. The problem.is that the Rays can actually be sourced for cheaper from other suppliers. Also - all Rays are still blacklisted. I have made contact with a gentkeman that gave me the guidelines to get a special permit for some Rays but the time and cost would not justify doing it just to get Cesar 1 very expensive female. Cesar has mentioned he would really want some Black Diamond rays which would cost abt R65k a pair from the Tan's.
From a European breeder same can be found at abt R10k a pair.
Big difference

So next year we can loom at takingbthe time to get such a permit in place and then maybe get the Rays for more people cause I think at reduced prices more ppl would be willing to buy some
