    Elephant seen on my last trip to Kruger in March 2019.

    Had another trip booked for October this year, but that has been cancelled. So frustrated.

    You guys are blessed with that nature around. For me it is so funny to notice (old) Dutch words in birdnames and places.

    Rietvlei must originate from Riet vallei (Reet Valley) I think.

    Yep lots of that!
    Riet = reed
    Vlei = closest translation is probably wetland. Perhaps Vlie in Dutch, not sure?
    Vallei (Afrikaans) = valley (English)

    Mmm Vlie is a water in between our Waddeneilanden (Islands above our country) of which one is called Vlieland.

    I expect vlei to be a shortcut voor vallei (valley) hahaha.

    Interesting!
    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vlei
    The word vlei is used predominantly in South Africa. It is an Afrikaans word derived from the Middle Dutch word for "valley" (valeye).[3] In Afrikaans, however, its meaning changed into that of the shallow lake. The Afrikaans and modern Dutch word for "valley" is vallei.

    Wowwwww. Watching a serie on NG or Discovery about a snakecatcher in SA. Mambas, Treesnakes, etc..... OMG. We have only one poissoness snake here and it never killed anyone I believe. Seen it twice in my life.
    But your snakes are a different story.

    I have a friend who au paired in the Netherlands for a few months and she told me Dutch and Afrikaans are extremely similar! She's Afrikaans too and was able to speak to the locals very easily.
    Plus Afrikaans did originate from Dutch, so it makes sense they're so similar
